Barry G. Schmaltz, 65, of Versailles passed away at 5pm Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at his home. He was born at Milan on November 16, 1949 the son of Clarence and Olive VanVolkenburgh Schmaltz. He was married to Debbie Meisberger on August 29, 1970 and his wife of 45 years survives.
Other survivors include one daughter Crystal (Alan) Welch of Versailles; two sons Shannon (Stacey) Schmaltz, and Keith (Beth) Schmaltz both of Versailles; grandchildren Autumn, Ethan, Haley, and Anna Schmaltz, and Lily and Cory Welch; two brothers Bill (Patricia) Schmaltz of Osgood, and Robert Schmaltz of Madisonville, Kentucky; also his mother-in-law Erlene Meisberger of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Junior Meisberger, his sister Shirley Summers, and his brother Ralph Schmaltz.
Mr. Schmaltz attended Holton High School and upon its closure he was a 1970 graduate of South Ripley High School. He retired in 2001 after 30 years with Cummins in Columbus and was a former assistant manager of the Jay C store in Osgood. He also had owned Schmaltz's Tune-up and Welding which he operated from his home. Barry was a member of the Holton Christian Church where he served as an elder and was a former member of the Holton Fire Department. Barry's love was muscle cars, drag racing, yard sales, his church, and his family.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 30 at 1:30pm at the Holton Christian Church with Bro. Bob McCreary officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 12:30pm until time of services Sunday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Holton Christian Church or the Hospice of Jennings County in care of the funeral home.
