Caroline I. Monroe, 85, of Versailles passed away Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. She was born at Iowa Falls, Iowa on May 4, 1923 the daughter of Ivan and Ethel Whitesell Hays. She was married to Marion Monroe in 1943 and he preceded her in death on March 9, 2000. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Pickett of Versailles; one son David Monroe of Versailles; grandchildren Jeff Pickett of Versailles, Jennifer (Jeff) Smith of Versailles, and Laurie (Dwight) Kreig of Batesville, and 7 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ivan Hays of Rialto, California. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Wilma Needham. Mrs. Monroe was a homemaker, had formerly worked for US Shoe, and was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church. She had attended the Pasadena Junior College in California where she studied nursing. She was a long time resident of the Colonial Manor of Versailles where she enjoyed playing cards with her neighbors. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 26 at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:30am until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Tanglewood Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
