Carrol E. Adkins, 83, of Versailles passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born at Boggstown on November 10, 1930 the son of Delza and Anna Marquardt Adkins. He was married to Freda Turner on September 20, 1948 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Rick (Darla) Adkins of Seymour and Carl (Sandy) Adkins of Crothersville; two daughters Dianne (Chris) Pearson of North Manchester and Susan Adkins of Bloomington; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Katherine Parrish, and his brothers Jim, Charles, and Alfred Adkins. Mr. Adkins was a 1948 graduate of Versailles High School and was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in Japan with the US Army as a Private First Class and received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He was a former employee of Monsanto, the Indiana State Highway Department, the Versailles Dunbrik Company, and Hitz Greenhouse in Versailles. Mr. Adkins retired in 1992 after 30 years with the Jefferson Proving Ground where he worked as an Explosive Test Operator. Carrol was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church, Versailles Masonic Lodge, and the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Mullins officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles where the Versailles Masonic Lodge will conduct services at 7:30pm. Memorials may be given to the Special Olympics of Wabash County, the Tanglewood Baptist Church, or the Therapy Department of Ripley Crossing in care of the funeral home.
