Charles Linkmeyer, 82, of Versailles, formerly of Friendship, passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at North Vernon on December 28, 1926 the son of Clemence and Ruth Sprickerhoff Linkmeyer. He was married to Pauline Kuhlman on June 24, 1950 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Ron (Janet) Linkmeyer of Friendship; one daughter Teresa (Mark) Fender of Bloomington; three grandchildren Holli (Adam) Gieb of Bloomington, Eric Adams of Farmers Retreat, and Jodi Linkmeyer of San Antonio, Texas; three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marie Benham. Mr. Linkmeyer was an Army veteran of WWII where he was a Tec-5 with the 63 Gun Battalion.
He received the Victory Medal, Army of Occupied Japan Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat, a former member of the Friendship Fire Department, and a member of the Brown Township American Legion. Mr. Linkmeyer worked at Jefferson Proving Ground as a steam boiler operator and pipe fitter, retiring in 1984.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 11 at 11am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmer's Retreat with Pastor Richard Wilkie officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by the Brown Township American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to Rescue 69 or St. John's Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
