Charles J. Tunny, 81, of Napoleon passed away Thursday, August 30, 2007 at his residence. He was born near Napoleon on March 30, 1926 the son of Thomas and Amelia Schmidt Tunny. He was married to Connie Payne on August 18, 1948 and she survives. Other survivors include three sons, Greg Tunny and his wife Vickie of Osgood, Kim Tunny and his wife Kelly of Versailles, and John R. Tunny and his wife Marina of Batesville; one daughter Sondra Jo Dutka and her husband Steve of Columbus; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Nicholas who was killed in Vietnam while serving in the military, brothers Edward, Jim, and Thomas Tunny; sisters Elizabeth Herbert, Kate Wagner, Eva Simon, Anna Mae Young, and Luella Locke. Mr. Tunny was a Navy veteran of WWII where he received the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, and the American Area Campaign Medal. He had also served as a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the St. John Catholic Church in Osgood and was a pipe fitter and plumber with Indianapolis Local 440. Mr. Tunny also farmed and had previously taught welding at the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September at 10am at St. John's Catholic Church in Osgood with Father Shawn Whittington officiating. Burial will be in the St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery in Napoleon. Visitation will be Sunday from 4pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rosary services at 6:30pm. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
