Chester S. Henderson

Chester S. Henderson, 87, of Versailles passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born on July 13, 1920 the son of Scott and Goldia Smith Henderson. Mr. Henderson was born on the farm that had been in his family since 1833 and spent his entire life there. He was married to Genelle Stevens on April 12, 1942 and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Rosalie Hooton and her husband Rev. Rand Hooton of Burney and Shirley Pavey and her husband Tom of Versailles; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Geneva Henderson, and his granddaughter Nadine Wiley. Mr. Henderson was a 1938 graduate of Versailles High School. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church, Versailles Lions Club, and the Ripley County Historical Society. He was a former director for the Ripley County Farm Bureau and was also a former youth leader at the Washington Baptist Church in Elrod. He also formerly served as an ambassador with "People to People" which included farm tours in New Zealand, Australia, and England. He was named Ripley County SWCD Master Farmer of the year in 1996. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 12, 2007 at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Harold Carter officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Sunday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Southeastern Indiana Baptist Youth Camp or Habitat for Humanity in care of the funeral home.
