David E. Hankins, 87, of Cross Plains, passed away Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Jefferson County, Indiana on February 5, 1917 the son of William Frederick and Myrtle Dalgleish Hankins. He was married to Freda Thomas on January 9, 1937 and she preceded him in death in January 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Steele and her husband Bob of Versailles and Janice McClure and her husband Donald of Madison; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; one brother, William Lloyd Hankins of Madison; three sisters, Esther Marie Hoffman of Canaan, Freda Mae Hansmann of Versailles, and Maxine Roberts of Kent.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Mitchell Hankins and Loren Hankins; three sisters, Marjorie Mathews, Lela Elston, and Laura Etta Sleek.
Mr. Hankins was an Army veteran of WWII and served with the Core of Engineers in Belgium and France. He was a member of the Cross Plains Church of Christ and the Brown Township American Legion and was a retired farmer.
Funeral Services will be Friday, February 13, 2004 at 11am at the Cross Plains Church of Christ with Brother Logan Fugate officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, February 12 from 4pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Military graveside rites will be given by the Brown Township American Legion.
Memorials may be given to the Cross Plains Church of Christ or the Cross Plains Methodist Cemetery.
