David O. Spencer

David O. Spencer, 85, of Hicks Ridge passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born near Canaan on November 11, 1925 the son of Harry and Doris Brinson Spencer. He was married to Ruby Huttsell on May 10, 1947 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Jerry Spencer of Hicks Ridge; four daughters Karen (Phillip) LeGrand of Mary Esther, Florida, P. Michelle Spencer-Spradling of Brooklyn, New York, Jane Spencer-Pierce of Salem, and Ann Spencer-King of Versailles; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Evelyn Green, and his brother Alton Spencer who was killed in France during WWII. Mr. Spencer was a 1943 graduate of Central High School in Madison. He was an Army veteran of WWII where he served with the 19 Combat Infantry and participated in the liberation of the Philippines. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with one bronze star, Philippine Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Meritorious Unit Award. David was a lifelong farmer and in 1966 he received the Greener Pastures Award through the ASCS. He was a member of the former Hicks Ridge Baptist Church and attended the Shelby Christian Church and was also a member of the Brown Township American Legion and the Versailles Masonic Lodge. David served on the board of directors for the Friendship State Bank for 31 years. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 10 at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery with military rites by the Brown Township American Legion. Visitation will be Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Shelby Christian Church or the Benham Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
