Donald R. Toops, 84, of the Hopewell community passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Manderley Health Care center in Osgood. He was born near Osgood on February 13, 1925 the son of Clarence and Bessie Grossman Toops. He was married to Mollie Hughes on May 4, 1947 and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter Rita (Oren) Rork of North Vernon; five sons, Larry (Blythe) Toops of Canton, Ohio, Lonnie (Melba) Toops of Edinburgh, Roger (Terri) Toops, Ray (Freda) Toops, and Darin (Samantha) Toops all of Osgood; daughter-in-law Cynthia Toops of Napoleon; 16 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son David Toops, his brother Dallas Toops, and his sister Deloris Summers. Mr. Toops was a 1943 graduate of Holton High School and was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. He was a farmer and had worked at the Ripley County Farm Bureau and Osgood Grain. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13 at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5pm to 9pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am Saturday until time of services at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell building fund in care of the funeral home.
