**Edith DeWire**, 93, of Holton
passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Westport on July 17, 1918 the daughter of Roscoe Bates Hughes and Florence French Hughes. She was married to Sidney DeWire on April 12, 1943 and he preceded her in death on March 14, 1985. Survivors include one son Larry (Sherry) DeWire of Holton; three daughters Carol Ann Buchanan of Holton, Kathy Heinzman of Greensburg, and Sandra Kay Luke of Versailles; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren; one brother Nelson (Madonna) Hughes of Cookeville, Tennessee; one sister Aileen (Jim) Cardinal of Versailles. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Keith Hughes and Cecil Hughes, her sister Eileen Zapfe, her step-mother Frances Hughes, son-in-law Bill Buchanan, daughter-in-law Judy DeWire, grandson William Lee Buchanan, and one great-granddaughter. As a child, Mrs. DeWire attended the Bethel School in the Flat Rock neighborhood near Osgood and later attended Holton High School. Edith was a homemaker and a member of the Flat Rock Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 16 at 1:30pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. David Shivers of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Flat Rock Cemetery near Osgood. Visitation will be Monday from 12pm until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Flat Rock Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
