Eleanor Hyatt, 100, of Rexville passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born near Rexville on January 4, 1907 the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Nellie) Nelson Maxwell. She was married to Kelsie Hyatt on March 4, 1939 and he preceded her in death on April 22, 1977. Survivors include one son Roger Hyatt and his wife Betty of Columbus, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers John, Joe, George, Charles, and Harry Maxwell, and her sisters Mari Jo Green and Ruth Maxwell.
In her lifetime Mrs. Hyatt witnessed both World Wars, the Great Depression, and man walking on the moon. She was a 1925 graduate of Versailles High School and among her friends surviving her is her high school classmate Mrs. Elva Little of Versailles. Due to road and travel conditions of the day, she would spend the week at Versailles in school and return home to Rexville on the weekends.
Mrs. Hyatt attended Hanover College, Indiana State University and Miami University. She taught school for 37 years in Ripley and Franklin Counties. Schools she taught at included Spades, Bates, Benham, Friendship, Cross Plains, Milan, and Jac-Cen-Del. She was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church, Ripley County Farm Bureau, Ripley County Historical Society, and the Ripley County Retired Teachers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 24 at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mark Walker of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Eleanor Hyatt Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
