Eugene L. Owens, 91, of Osgood passed away Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Signature Health Care in Bedford, Kentucky. He was born at Rushville on August 2, 1921 the son of Glenn and Ethel Goodpaster Owens. Survivors include three brothers Joe (Susan) Owens, John (Kathryn) Owens, and Charlie Owens all of Osgood; two sisters Lou Trueblood of Salem and Georgia (Jerry) Adkinson of Elrod. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Rawley Dale, Harold Edward, Russell, Jim, and Denny Owens, and his sister Faye Mills. Survivors also include his sister-in-law and caretaker Beverly Owens.
Mr. Owens was a Marine Veteran of WWII where he served as a Corporal participating in action at Iwo Jima, the Volcano Islands, and in the Occupation of Japan. He served his country from 1943 to 1946 and was a Rifle Expert and Bayonet qualified. In civilian life Mr. Owens was a farmer, a certified mechanic, and had worked for his brother Denny at Owen's Auction Barn. He also enjoyed racing stock cars and harness racing. With his favorite horse Thunder, Gene won many races, ribbons and trophies. Gene was a member of the Napoleon VFW. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Michael Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Greendale Cemetery at Osgood with military rites by the Napoleon VFW and the Osgood American Legion. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9am until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Napoleon VFW in care of the funeral home.
