Gary S. Champe, 59, of Dillsboro passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the University Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was born at Knoxville, Tennessee on March 12, 1949 the son of Allen and Doris Case Champe. He was married to Beverly Chipman on May 17, 2003 and she survives. Other survivors include his mother Doris Champe of Dillsboro. Mr. Champe was US Army Retired having served 25 years in the military. He was a former POW and had served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He received three Commendation Medals, two Achievement Medals, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a five time World Champion skeet shooter. He was a gold medallist in 1992 in the United Kingdom Open and also in the 1993 Euro Cup. He was also a four time gold medallist in the 1994 world championship and was a member of the Skeet Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church at Versailles and the Versailles American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September at 3pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. James Byerly of the Tyson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Cemetery at Madison with full military honors. Visitation will be Saturday from 1pm until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
