**George (Jack) Smith**, 77, of Versailles passed away Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born at Batesville on April 18, 1933 the son of Frank and Hazel Caplinger Smith. He was married to Ava Lostutter on September 3, 1955 and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter Lynn (Rod) Summers of Hebron, Kentucky; grandchildren, Lydia and Lauren Summers; one sister Kay (Robert) Russell of Moores Hill; three brothers Dale (Claudia) Smith of Spring Hill, Florida, Richard (Joyce) Smith of Westport, and Alec (Dephane) Smith of Milan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Jean Raeburn Smith Fricker, his sister Betty Stutler, and his brother Ron Smith.
Mr. Smith was a 1951 graduate of Milan High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he served as a Corporal in the 740 Artillery Battalion and received the National Defense Service Medal. Jack was a 26 year employee of the Southeastern Indiana REMC where he retired as member service director in 1995. He received an outstanding service award for 22 years of service from the Electric Institute of Indiana/Indiana Statewide Service Member section in 1995. He had also been a part time employee with the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home since 2002. He was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also a long time member of the Versailles Lions Club and was Pumpkin Show parade chairman for many years and was named a W. P. Woods Fellow. He had also been a member of the Board of Directors of Tyson Manor and was a member of the Versailles American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 29 at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church Rev. Russell Stephens and Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home and from 10am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Tanglewood Baptist Church or the cemetery in care of the funeral home.
