George R. Stegner, 80, of Versailles passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born on May 13, 1924 the son of Virgil and Madeline Decker Stegner. He was married to Audrey Jackson on August 17, 1947 and she preceded him in death on February 7, 2000. Survivors include one son, Gary Stegner and his wife Sally of Versailles; grandchildren Jeremy Stegner and Elizabeth Stegner. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Virgil. Mr. Stegner was a 1942 graduate of Holton High School and had attended Franklin College and Indiana State University. He was a registered X ray technician and had retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground. Mr. Stegner was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church, Versailles F&AM #7 and was a 33 degree Mason. He also was a member of the Murat Shrine, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, the Ripley County Historical Society, the York Rite, and had been named a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Stegner had served on the Versailles Town Board for 12 years and had served on the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 11 at 10:30am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Rev. Michael Hendrix officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 10 from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Masonic services by the Versailles Masonic Lodge at 7:30pm. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Tyson United Methodist Church or the Versailles Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.
