Helen M. Daugherty, 95, of Columbus, formerly of Holton, passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Silver Oaks Health Center in Columbus. She was born near Holton on June 13, 1914, the daughter of Fred and Anna Belle Davis Koelmel. She was married to Rev. Jacob Daugherty on August 3, 1935 and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1955.
Survivors include one daughter Laura Ann (James) Payer of Columbus; three sons Fred (Bobbi) Daugherty of Bensalem, Pennsylvania, Hugh (Janet) Daugherty of Columbus, and William (Nancy) Daugherty of Fort Wayne; 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her step-son Joe Daugherty, grandchildren Ruth Elizabeth Daugherty, David Daugherty, and Stephanie DeSilva, step-grandson Louis Daugherty, her brothers Ted and Norman Koelmel, and her sisters Ida Bostic, Margaret Bostic, Martha Benham, Florence Ellis, and Mildred Swinney.
Mrs. Daugherty was a 65 year member of the Hopewell Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in the ABWM. She was also active at the North Vernon Senior Center. She was a former employee of Tony Rehag's egg processing plant at Holton and had been a cook at the White Pine Restaurant in Versailles. Mrs. Daugherty had also worked as an in-home caregiver in Indianapolis.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 25 at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the Otter Creek Cemetery at Nebraska. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell building fund in care of the funeral home.
