Howard N. Mitchell

Howard N. Mitchell, 74, of Versailles passed away Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the VA Hospital in Louisville. He was born at Ligon, Kentucky on July 29, 1931 the son of G. Dewey and Catherine Tackett Mitchell. He was married to Lola Newsome on September 19, 1951 and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Donetta Benham and her husband Jim of Benham, Melissa Dunagan and Kurt of Benham, and Angela Sharp and Gene of Milan; five grandchildren, Melanie Evans, Christina Moore, and Kimberly Benham all of Benham, Tammy Witte of Dillsboro, and Stephanie Roberts of Lawrenceburg; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Claude Mitchell of Ligonier; two sisters, Etta Gluba of Iowa City, Iowa, and Maudine Caudill of Prestonburg, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Toy and Lloyd Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the Korean War. In May of 1950 he was shipped to Okinawa for occupation duty with the 29 Infantry. On October 9, 1950 he was wounded while serving in the Puson Perimeter and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Versailles American Legion where he served as commander in 1976, Milan VFW, Versailles F&AM #7, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Murat Shrine. Mr. Mitchell had been a manager of Cuzzin Jacks Discount Store in Versailles for several years. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Saturday, September from 4pm to 8pm with Masonic services at 7:30pm. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Fire Department or Rescue 69 in care of the funeral home.
