James J. Humphrey, 84, of Osgood passed away Monday, May 7, 2007 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born at Osgood on July 8, 1922 the son of Henry and Mercy Bilby Humphrey. He was married to Jeraldine Jahnigen on January 20, 1951 and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Jamie Stratton and her husband Sam of Lafayette and Janine Stratton and her husband Mike of Holton; grandchildren Andy, Jim, Beth, Christina, and Sam Stratton; one sister Emma Lu Michel of Osgood; nieces Carole Michel of Osgood and Jenny Lou Schwipps of Milan.
Mr. Humphrey was a 1940 graduate of Osgood High School and had served with the US Coast and Geodetic Survey. He was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of the Osgood Masonic Lodge, and the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite. He and his father had owned and operated the Humphrey Motor Company, a Chevrolet dealership in Osgood which was in business from 1922 until 1980. He had also driven a bus for the Osgood schools, was a former employee of the Versailles State Park, and former manager of the Versailles License Branch. He was also a former member of the Osgood Fire Department and the Osgood Civic Club. Mr. Humphrey had formerly served as Ripley County Building Inspector and also had served on the Ripley County Council.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11 at 10:30 am at the Osgood United Methodist Church with Rev. Maxine Vallejo-Rixman of the Osgood United Methodist Church and Rev. Charles Cole of the Dabney Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Napoleon. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Masonic services by the Osgood Masonic Lodge at 8 pm. Memorials may be given to the Osgood United Methodist Church or the Osgood Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.
