John E. Hammon

John E. Hammon, 83, of Cincinnati passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008 at the Tri-County Health Care Center in Fairfield, Ohio. He was born near Versailles on May 17, 1925 the son of Elbridge and Erma Pratt Hammon. He was married to Ernestine Reuter on January 26, 1952 and she preceded him in death on March 19, 2006. Survivors include one daughter Janie Hammon and one son Wayne Hammon both of Cincinnati; granddaughters Amanda, Rebecca, and Sarah; one sister Mrs. Dorothy Kimball of Holton; one brother Frank Hammon of Republic, Missouri. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norman and Rufus Hammon, and his sisters Lucille Schlotman, June Hansen, Maebeth DeBurger, Blanche Ross, Dolores Hammon, and Edith Hammon. Mr. Hammon was a 1943 graduate of Holton High School. He served with the Merchant Marines and was an Army veteran of WWII where he served with the 185 Engineers Battalion, specializing in news photography. He worked as a conductor on the B & O and CSX Railroad for 30 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge at Miamitown, Ohio and also a member of the Versailles American Legion. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. David Shivers of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30am until time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Tanglewood Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
