Jon B. Stegemiller, 72, of Cross Plains, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 2, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Jon was born on October 6, 1953, at Whitlatch Clinic in Milan, Indiana, to Francis “Fritz” I. Stegemiller and Mary Jeannette Brown of Cross Plains. He was a 1971 graduate of South Ripley High School and went on to graduate from Purdue University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a minor in conservation. A proud Boilermaker, Jon was a lifelong Purdue fan and, for better or worse, remained a loyal supporter of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.
Jon dedicated 30 years of service to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, working in the Division of State Parks at Versailles, Clifty Falls, and Charlestown. Over the years, he served in many roles, including an award- winning licensed water distribution Class A wastewater operator, assistant manager, maintenance technician, and pool operator.
An avid outdoorsman, Jon loved hunting anything that crawled, swam, flew or gobbled. He was especially known for his passion for raising and breeding hunting dogs, earning national recognition for his coonhounds, beagles, and mountain feists. His love for the outdoors and his dogs was only matched by his dedication to family and friends.
Jon is survived by his loving wife, Robin Wall Stegemiller of Cross Plains; his daughter, Jayne Erin Stegemiller (Jeff Smith) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; his stepson, Caleb M. Carlock (Sarah) of Sellersburg; his stepdaughter, Hannah M. Carlock of Noblesville; and two step-grandsons of Sellersburg. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Christy and Casey Speer; his sister, Janelle Stegemiller of Cross Plains; his brother, Jeff Stegemiller of Versailles; along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and hunting companions.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, Russell and Mable Wall; and his brother- and sister-in-law, David and Bonnie Wall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Aurora Recreation Community Center in care of the Parkinson’s Exercise Class.
Jon will be remembered for his strong faith, his love of the outdoors, and the deep connections he built with those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories shared.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, May 6 at the Cross Plains Methodist Church with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will also be on Wednesday at the church beginning at 10 a.m. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of arrangements.
