Leon H. Berner, 82, of Cross Plains passed away at 5:38am Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at home near Pleasant on July 31, 1933 the son of Clifford and Wilma Nolker Berner. He was married to Esther Knigga at St. Peters Lutheran Church at Bear Branch on February 20, 1960 and his wife of 55 years survives. Other survivors include one son Michael (Linda) Berner of Cross Plains; two daughters Debbie Berner of Camby, and Kathy (Rob) Daugherty of Vevay; 7 grandchildren Erica (Kyle) Bechman of Cross Plains, Ashley Crafton of Indianapolis, Natalie (Josh) Wheeler of Vevay, Kevin Berner of Louisville, Jenna (Jason) Kaylor of Vincennes, Steven Berner of New York, and Dakota Crafton of Cross Plains; 6 great-grandchildren Jesse and Easton Bechman, Addison Wheeler, and Logan, Ava, and AJ Crafton. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Berner was a farmer and had retired after 17 years as an inspector with the Indiana Department of Transportation in Seymour. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served aboard the USS Sperry with the US Navy. Leon was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dewberry and was former president of the AAL. He had also served on the Switzerland County 4-H Fair Board. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25 at 11am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dewberry with Rick Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
