**Norman L. Huelson**, 89, of Versailles passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Shelby Township near New Marion on November 22, 1919 the son of Fred and Mary Flick Huelson. He was married to Rebecca Belew on December 16, 1940 and she preceded him in death on February 7, 1979. He was married to Wanda Hawley Fields on August 16, 1980 and she survives.
Other survivors include three daughters Norma Jean (Ron) Evans of Seymour, Mary Jane (Wayne) Williams of Scottsburg, and Judith Ann (Chris) Hassfurder of Madison; three step-sons, Jeff (Jennifer) Fields of Hereford, Arizona, Scott (Denise) Fields of New Marion, and Todd (Tricia) Fields of Liberty; four step-daughters Jackie (Jerry) Flannery of Batesville, Robin (Bill) Cannarito and Marsha (Bruce) Spivey both of Napoleon, and Jodee Fields and her fiancé Bruce Coy of Versailles; 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, and 11 step-great grandchildren.
Mr. Huelson was a 1937 graduate of New Marion High School. He was a 31 year veteran of the Indiana State Police having started in the Connersville District in 1942. Prior to that, his recruiting class was trained in the use of horses, which took place at the Culver Military Academy. In 1956 he was assigned to the Versailles Post and was promoted to Corporal. His other promotions included Sergeant in 1958 and Lieutenant in 1970 where he became the first Lieutenant of the Versailles Post. Mr. Huelson retired from the State Police in 1973 and became the Special Investigator for the Ripley County Prosecutor's Office where he worked for 26 years retiring in 1999.
He attended the New Marion Baptist Church and was a member of the Versailles Lions Club where he was named "Lion of the Year" in 2008. He was also a member of the Indiana State Police Pioneers and the Versailles Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 4 at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Baptist Church, the Gideon's, the Holton Cemetery, or the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
