Purnia M Francis, 88, of Versailles passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Whitesburg in Letcher County, Kentucky on February 18, 1919 the daughter of Arthur and Maude Taylor Sergent. She was married to John Francis on February 9, 1942 and he preceded her in death on February 9, 1988. Survivors include one son Fred (Candy) Francis of Elizabethtown; two daughters, Hazel (Dennis) Lemen of Zionsville and Nancy (Lee) Crocker of Waverly, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Natalie (Jerry) Gilpin of Versailles, Christopher Crocker of Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth Crocker of Waverly, Ohio, Nicholas (Amy) Lemen of Indianapolis, Jeff Lemen of Palm Desert, California, and Tony Francis and Kylie Francis both of Elizabethtown; four great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; one brother Willis Sergent of Paris Crossing; one sister, Mattie Bates of Sellersburg. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Benton, Andrew, and Paris Sergent, and her sister Alia Fields. Mrs. Francis was a homemaker. She was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where she participated in the Ruth Browne Circle. She was also a member of the Lamplighters Home Ec Club and was a volunteer with the Ripley County Chapter of the Red Cross and with the American Heart Association. Her hobbies included her grandchildren, quilting, and sewing. Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden at Madison. Visitation will be Friday 5 pm till 8 pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Baptist Church Music Fund.
