Robert E. McNew, 87, of the Hopewell community near Holton passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at his home. He was born at Osgood on December 17, 1923 the son of Wilbur and Lena Heaton McNew. He was married to Zuella Hull on April 17, 1949 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Marvin (Sue) McNew of Holton; three daughters Marlene (Steve) Hedrick of Batesville, Kathy Jones of Lawrenceburg, and Gail Dicus of Aurora; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter Crystal Dicus, his brother Keith McNew, and his sisters Wanda Jackson, Betty Gilley, Ruth Croan, and Nancy Bodenberg. Mr. McNew was a 1941 graduate of Holton High School and was a 75 year member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. He was a farmer his entire life and was a rural mail carrier for the Holton Post Office for 33 years. Bob founded and owned the former Farm Chemical Company in Holton and was a former Ripley County Conservation Farmer of the Year. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 11 at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
