Russell F. May, 84, of Hanover passed away Monday, September 15, 2008 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born near Benham in Ripley County on January 28, 1924 the son of William H. and Alta Tunks May. He was married to Ottilie (Margaret) Kraus on June 28, 1969 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Fred R. George of Lawrenceburg; one daughter Lucia L. Landry of Pennsylvania; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Estol May of Dallas and Earl May of Rexville; three sisters, Lora Swinney of Versailles, Lila Ziegler of Greensburg, and Evelyn Meek of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Stanley May and Leroy May.
Mr. May was a veteran of WWII where he served with the 93 Cavalry Recon Squad in the Rhineland of Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars. He had worked for the Ripley County Highway Department, Jefferson Proving Ground, and had farmed. He was a member of the Versailles American Legion, Ripley County Voiture 40 & 8, and attended the First Assembly of God at Madison.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 18 at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden at Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
