Samuel M. Raney, 99, of Versailles passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the Manderly Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born in the Tanglewood community near Versailles on December 22, 1905 the son of Robert Newton and Mary Alice Jackson Raney. He was married to Emma Melba Robertson on June 22, 1929 and she preceded him in death on September 4, 1994. Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Galyean and her husband Robert of Richmond, Doris Kurtz and her husband August "Bud" Kurtz of Angola, and Barbara Kemp and her husband William Kemp of Osgood; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Besides his parents and his wife he was preceded in death by his son Carl; four brothers, Glen, Floyd, Jack, and Hershel Raney; five sisters, Ethel Sheets, Edith Raney, Agnes Richmond, and Madaline Moody. Mr. Raney was a 1923 graduate of Versailles High School and graduated from the Fort Wayne School of Business. He was a 35 year employee of Coca-Cola where he managed a distribution center in Angola and was an Army veteran of WWII. Mr. Raney was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church and a member and past commander of the Versailles American Legion. He was a 70 year member of the Masonic Lodge having belonged in Angola and was currently a member of the Versailles lodge. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 13 at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Becky Pohle of the Tanglewood Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Tanglewood Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Saturday, March 12 from 2pm to 4pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. The Versailles Masonic Lodge will conduct services Saturday at the funeral home and military graveside rites will be given by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.
