Shirley Halcomb of Versailles passed away Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Indian River Medical Center in Sebastian, Florida. She was born at McKey in Owsley County, Kentucky the daughter of George and Vesta Metcalf Gabbard. She was married to George Halcomb on May 17, 1956 and he survives. Other survivors include two sons Richard (Karen) Halcomb and Joe (Susie) Halcomb both of Versailles; one daughter Karen (Jeff) Hafft also of Versailles; one step-son Randy (Carol) Holcomb of Versailles; 8 grandchildren; one sister Zella Cruncelton of South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Elbie, Ed, Fred, Jim, Benny, Bill, and Clarence Gabbard and her sisters Beatrice Hansmann, Christina Gray, and Rosemary Peters. Mrs. Halcomb was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church and the Versailles Chapter of the Eastern Star. Shirley and her husband owned and operated the Halcomb Home Center in Versailles. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 20 at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Minister Randy Thieman of the Shelby Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Tanglewood Cemetery or the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
