Verna Mae Schwagmeier, 76, of Benham passed away Monday, December 13, 2010 at the home of her daughter near Versailles. She was born near Cross Plains on August 22, 1934 the daughter of Roy and Naomi Bliton Poling. She was married to Robert Schwagmeier on August 27, 1951 and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1999.
Survivors include two sons Robert Schwagmeier, Jr. and Bill (Tammy) Schwagmeier both of Versailles; three daughters Barbara (Bob) Smith of Osgood, Brenda Sanders and her companion John Cornett of Versailles, and Becky (Rodney) Stratton of Holton; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; five brothers Bill (Kitty) Poling of Madison, Max (Joyce) Poling and Jim (Carol) Poling both of Canaan, Joe Poling of Florida, and Doug Poling of Jeffersonville; one sister Kay Smith of Bennington; sister-in-law Carolyn Poling of Butlerville; brother-in-law Jack Baugh of Versailles. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Jean Harlow and Audrey Baugh; her brother Richard Poling, and an infant sister and brother, and two infant grandsons.
Mrs. Schwagmeier retired as supervisor of housekeeping at Muscatatuck. She had also worked for the Buchanans and Werners in their store at Benham and sold Tupperware. Verna Mae was a member of the Benham United Methodist Church and the Benham Blue Bells Home Ec Club.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 17 at 11am at the Benham United Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Case officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Benham Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
