Virginia R. Downey

Virginia R. Downey, 83, of Versailles, formerly of Holton passed away Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born at Anderson on May 7, 1920, the daughter of Homer and Estella Boring Shinkle. She was married to Floyd Downey on May 22, 1942 and he died on June 25, 1970. Mrs. Downey was a homemaker and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. She was a 1939 graduate of Holton High School. Survivors include four sons, Larry Downey, Ronald Downey and his wife Nancy, Alan Downey and his wife Christina all of Holton, and Terry Downey of Osgood; three daughters, Joyce Peters and her husband Robert of Brownstown, Linda Downey of Versailles, and Phyllis Swinney of Holton; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers Robert and Richard Shinkle and her sister Elizabeth Hohnstreiter. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 21 at 2pm at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, December 20 from 4pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Holton Cemetery or the Hopewell Baptist Church building fund.
