Virginia Myrle Wood, 85, of Cross Plains passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born in Jefferson County near Canaan on June 11, 1926, the daughter of James and Alma Selig Hankins. She was married to Everett Wood on September 6, 1942, and he survives. Other survivors include one daughter Carol Berry of Versailles; two sons Ralph (Faith Ann) Wood and Robert (Dotty) Wood both of Versailles; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one brother Dale (Clara) Hankins of Versailles; two sisters Dorothy Holton of Dillsboro and Judy (Omer) Wilson of Holton. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, her granddaughter Linda Jane Berry, and her son-in-law William Berry.
Mrs. Wood, along with her husband, owned and operated Wood Farm & Industrial Supply in Versailles for 36 years. Myrle was also a homemaker and assisted her husband with their farming operation. She was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship for 61 years and served her church as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and church treasurer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 31 at 11am at the Bear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to Child Evangelism Fellowship or the Gideons in care of the funeral home.
