W. Max Underwood, 81, of Versailles passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at his home. He was born near Correct on August 5, 1925 the son of Walter and Ruth Flick Underwood. He was married to Marie Werner on June 21, 1952 and she preceded him in death on June 9, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his son Gary.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Underwood and his wife Mary Jean Wiegert of Bellingham, Washington and David Underwood and his wife Julie of Versailles; one daughter, Amy Kot and her husband Mark of Raleigh, North Carolina; grandsons Ryan and Dylan Underwood and granddaughters Jessica and Stefanie Kot. Mr. Underwood was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School and served in the Army during WWII with the 372 Army Band Force. He graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with a Bachelors Degree in agriculture. While at Purdue, he was a charter member of the Farmhouse Fraternity, of which his grandson Ryan is now a member.
He was a retired farmer and had worked for the Soil Conservation Service. Mr. Underwood also served on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Indiana REMC for 21 years and for the Ripley County Bank Board of Directors for 26 years. He had served as a leader for 15 years for the Versailles Town and Country 4H Club.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Olean, the Versailles American Legion, and the Versailles Lions Club. He and Marie enjoyed traveling, dancing, and working outdoors, but received the most fulfillment from time spent with their family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 23 at 11am at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Dewberry, due to remodeling at the church in Olean. Pastor Marcus Felde will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Olean with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion.
Visitation will be Friday from 4pm until 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Improvement Fund in care of the funeral home.
