Walter S. Lowe, 81, of Osgood passed away Thursday, December 13, 2007 at his home. He was born at Quercus Grove in Switzerland County on January 23, 1926 the son of William Hubert and Grace Wilson Lowe. He was married to Virginia Jahnigen on October 9, 1948 and she preceded him in death on November 27, 2001. Survivors include a very dear friend, companion, and classmate, Josephine Westmeyer of Versailles; one son Jerry Lowe and his wife Ellen of Versailles; one daughter Joyce Dwulet and her husband Francis of Greenwood; grandchildren Christopher Dwulet of Greenwood, Darrin Lowe of Greenfield, and Kristen Lowe of Versailles; one sister Mildred (Betty) Lowe of Vevay. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William Lowe.
Mr. Lowe was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in the fall of 1943 and served on Guam during WWII as a radioman where he sent encrypted messages from ship to shore. He spent 33 years with the Indiana State Police as a telecommunications officer and microwave technician, retiring in 1991. He was a 69 year member of the Tyson United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and secretary. He was a 59 year member of the Versailles Masonic Lodge, serving as master and secretary. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, and a life member of the Versailles American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 17 at 11am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Rev. Jim Byerly and Rev. Joe Bottorff officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Sunday from 3pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Tyson United Methodist Church Endowment Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
