Willard Gordon Hughes, 78, of Versailles passed away Friday, August 4, 2006 at his residence. He was born at Bourne, Kentucky on February 17, 1928 the son of Charles and Sally Montgomery Hughes. He was married to Louise Batchelor on October 16, 1948 and she survives. Other survivors include five daughters, Sally Wetzler and her husband Bobby of Versailles, Ethel Snyder of Grandview, Washington, Virginia Risk of Hobart, Indiana, Joy Cappel and her husband Ken of Versailles, and Dawn Kamman and her husband Chris of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ben Hughes of Corinth, Mississippi and Oscar Hughes of Hillsboro, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Ethel Wray of Phoenix, Arizona and Nonia Brown of Sterling, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, George, and Luther Hughes, grandson Levi Snyder Bryant and great-grandson Cody Swinney. Mr. Hughes lived and farmed in the Correct neighborhood south of Versailles for several years. He was a Marine veteran of WWII where he served in occupied China. He had formerly worked for Cord's Quarry, Schmaltz Ready Mix, Versailles Dunbrik, and had retired from the Ripley County Highway Department. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes of the Bear Creek Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside rites conducted by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Monday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Fire Department or the Bear Creek Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
