William S. Corning, 84, of Versailles passed away Monday August 1, 2005 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at Elmira, New York on May 31, 1921 the son of Roland and Martha Ann McKinney Corning. He was married to Barbara Travis on August 11, 1945 and she survives. Other survivors include two brothers R. Daniel Newhouse of New Orleans and E. Alan Newhouse of Urbana, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Roland Corning.
Mr. Corning was a 1939 graduate of Lawrenceburg High School and was a 60 year member of the Lawrenceburg Masonic Lodge. He had attended Purdue University and was a member of the Purdue Alumni Association and the President's Council of Purdue. Mr. Corning served in the Army Air Force during WWII as a supply Sergeant with the Engineering Corps. He was a retired sales supervisor for Stegner Foods and had also worked as a sales representative for General Foods.
Mr. Corning was a member of the Hamline United Methodist Church in Lawrenceburg, the Versailles Lions Club, and the Versailles American Legion. He was currently serving on the SWCD board of directors, the board for Hoosier Historic Hills, and was a former board member of Oxbow Inc. in Cincinnati. He was also a charter member of the Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home of Versailles is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Roland S. Corning Memorial Fund for the Purdue University School of Civil Engineering in care of the funeral home.
