William K. Uhlman, 84, of Cross Plains passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at his home. He was born at Cross Plains on October 17, 1928 the son of John and Coral Acre Uhlman. He was married to Betty Large on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Osgood and she preceded him in death on April 30, 2010.
Survivors include one daughter Lynn Ann Uhlman of Cross Plains and her fiancé Damon Feerer of Madison; one granddaughter Erica Anne (Kyle) Bechman of Cross Plains; one great-grandson J. W. Bechman. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Uhlman was a 1946 graduate of Cross Plains High School. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1957 with the 503 MP Battalion assigned to General Patton's Third Army. Bill, along with his father, owned and operated Uhlman's Garage and Service Station, Uhlman's Feed and Grain, and Uhlman's Mower Sales all in Cross Plains. He and Betty owned The Antique Barn in Cross Plains and they had traveled all across the United States buying and selling antiques. He was the former manager of the Ranch Supermarket in Madison and later worked at the Harvest Supermarket in Greensburg. He had also been employed with the Jay C Food Stores, helped start the Foods Plus in Madison, and at the time of his death was an 18 year employee with Wal-Mart in Madison.
Bill was a member of the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 11am at the Cross Plains United Methodist Church with Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Cross Plains United Methodist Cemetery, Hospice of South Central Indiana, or the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
