 Ferryl Smith, 91, of Warsaw, Kentucky formerly of Milan passed away Tuesday December 21, 2004 at the Gallatin Health Care Center in Warsaw. She was born near Osgood on August 5, 1913 the daughter of Wilbur and Louise Nosekabel Radican. She was married to Kenneth Smith and he preceded her in death on June 28, 1987. Survivors include her step-daughter Barbara Jean Smith of Warsaw; one niece, Kathy Williamson and family of Warsaw; one nephew Victor Radican and family of Sacramento, California along with several great-nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Horace Radican. Mrs. Smith was a 1931 graduate of Versailles High School and formerly worked at Ma Curry’s Restaurant in Versailles. She was also a homemaker and a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 27th at 12 Noon at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Michael Hendrix of the Tyson United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00AM until time of services. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Tyson United Methodist Church.

 

Mary Alice Cannon, 80, of Versailles passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at The Palms in Sebring, Florida. She was born in Jennings County on January 4, 1924 the daughter of Andrew and Thena Neilis Updike. She was married to Robert Cannon on July 14, 1942 and he survives. Other survivors include one daughter Jeanie Benham and her husband Charles of Sellersburg, Indiana; two grandchildren Michelle Cannon of Indianapolis and Dusty Benham of Sellersburg and her life long friend Martha Lee Green of North Vernon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Michael Cannon. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the First Christian Church of North Vernon and had worked as a librarian for the Tyson Library in Versailles. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 30th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. John Scudder officiating. Della L. Heimsath, 90, of Holton passed away Saturday , December 11, 2004 at the St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon. She was born at Deleware  on March 29, 1914 the daughter of William and Claudia Horton Ensinger. She was married to Marvin Heimsath and he preceded  her in death in 1965. Mrs. Heimsath was a 1932 graduate of Holton High School and operated Holton Sundries in Holton from 1945 to 1995. She was a member of  the Holton United Methodist Church. Survivors include one sister. Viola Pickett of Holton along with several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Floyd and Lee Ensinger. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 15th at 11am at the Holton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Hadler officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 14th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton –Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Holton United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

James T. Franklin, 85, of Osgood passed away Saturday December 11, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born at Chicago on September 15, 1919 the son of Paul Victor and Laura Allen Franklin. He was married to Ida Lucille Volz on June 12, 1938 and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter Joyce Miller and her husband Ralph of Osgood; five grandchildren James Miller and his wife Bonnie of Holton, Sheri Deaton of Vevay, Jon Miller and Sharon of Holton, Merri Price of Batesville, and Teri Henry of Cincinnati along with 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Marietta Hackman of Osgood and Joan Hammon of Orlando, Florida; sister-in-law Nellie Franklin of Marianna, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul Franklin, Jr., Robert Franklin, Charles Franklin, and Floyd Franklin.

Mr. Franklin was a 1938 graduate of Osgood High School and was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the 119th Infantry Regiment and the  30th Infantry Division. He received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle at Aladorf, Germany on November 26, 1944. Other military honors included three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, EAME Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Franklin retired from Seagrams in 1979. He was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, the Osgood American Legion, the Napoleon VFW, and was a former member of the Osgood Fire Department. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 14th at 11am at the Osgood United Methodist Church with Rev. Rob Rixman officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military graveside rites by the Osgood American Legion. Visitation will be Monday December 13th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital or the Osgood United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Jack Begley, 58, of Versailles passed away Sunday, November 28th at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born in Cincinnati on April 12, 1946 the son of David and Clara Noble Begley. He was married to Angel Elsen on October 22, 1983 and she survives. Other survivors include three sons, Chris Begley and Jack Begley, Jr. at home and John Begley of Versailles; one daughter Samantha Begley at home; his father David Begley of Versailles and his mother-in-law Margaret Elsen of Versailles; ten grandchildren; one brother Charles Begley of Versailles. Mr. Begley was a driver for Roadway Express for 18 years and was a member of Teamsters Local 100. He was an Air Force veteran of the  Vietnam War. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 1st at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Father Carl Hawver officiating. Visitation will be from noon on Wednesday until time of services. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside services by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the Immaculate Conception Academy at Oldenburg in care of the funeral home.

 

Norma D. Whitham Krall, 97, of Osgood passed away Thursday, November 25, at the Hickory Creek Health Care Center in Greensburg.  She was born on Red Hog Pike, near East Enterprise, in Switzerland County on August 18, 1907.  She was the thirteenth child of Benjamin Bruce and Mary Elizabeth Bocock Whitham.  She was married to Elmer I. Krall on February 2, 1929, and he preceded her on November 7, 1987.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Norris E. and Joan Krall of Osgood, Grandsons, Kenny, Terry and Mike and Great Grandchildren, Mary Beth, Matthew, Megan, Mitchell, Amanda and Evan Krall. four Step Grandchildren and twelve step Great Grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter-in-law, Mary Lock Krall, brothers George, Charles, Willard, Clyde, Chauncey, Stanley, Dilver, Clarence and Paul and sisters, Bessie, Hazel and Mildred.  She had been employed as a cook at the Jefferson Craig Elementary School and the Dairy Queen in Vevay, Indiana.  She retired and moved with her husband to Osgood in 1972.  In 1997, she moved to her new home on her son’s farm west of Osgood where she lived until 2003 when she fell and broke her leg.  When she could no longer be cared for at home she was lovingly cared for at Hickory Creek in Greensburg. Services will be held Sunday, November 28, 2004 at 2:00pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Visitation will be Sunday from 12:00pm until time of services. Graveside services will be in the Vevay, Indiana Cemetery on Monday, November 29, 2004 at 10:30am.

 

J. Wade Thayer, 80, of Osgood passed away Saturday November 20, 2004 at the Hospitality Hall of the Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. He was born at Morristown in Shelby County on March 3 1924 the son of Wade R. and Ruby Johnson Thayer. He was married to Mary Kamman on August 25, 1946 and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Greg Thayer and his wife Yolanda of Winchester; one daughter Kaye Callen and her husband Steve of Milan; four grandsons, Brian Thayer and his wife Melisa of Westfield, Evan Thayer of Winchester, Brad Callen and his wife Amanda of Ft. Wayne, and Matt Callen of Indianapolis, and several nieces and nephews.  Mr. Thayer was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Jane Ann, his sister Bernice Brown, and his brothers Earl and Spence Thayer. He was a 1942 graduate of Osgood High School and had attended Purdue University where he majored in poultry science. He was an Army veteran of WWII where he served as a Master Seargent in the China offensive and the Burma Trail. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. He owned and operated M&W Poultry and the Village Flowers in Osgood for several years. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church, the Osgood American Legion, Osgood F & AM #603, the Sundowners Club of Cape Coral, Florida, the Indiana Poultry Association, and was a charter member of the Osgood Lions Club. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 24th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Don Buck officiating. Burial will be in the Hanover Cemetery at Morristown. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Osgood Masonic Lodge or the Osgood Fire Department in care of the funeral home.

 

Hank Graves, 64, of Versailles passed away Saturday, November 20, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Rushville on June 27, 1940 the son of John and Lillian Gregg Graves and was married to Pat Angus on July 15, 1967 and she survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Jodi Comer and her husband Jason of Osgood,  Jenny Graves, Molly Steele and her husband Brian, and Katie Sheets and her husband Eric all of Indianapolis; grandchildren Emily Huntington, Luke Comer, and Jack Steele; two brothers Lowell Graves and his wife Ginny of Pensecola, Florida and Jerry Graves and his wife Bernie of Cincinnati; two sisters Nancy Blake and her husband Don of Cincinnati and Margie Malone of Florida. Mr. Graves was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era  and a member of the Versailles American Legion. He was a coppersmith for Seagrams for 27 years retiring in 1995. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 23rd at 10am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Sandy Becker of the Versailles American Legion officiating. Visitation will be Monday, November 22nd from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.

 

Marcia K. Martin Sinclair, 48, of Cincinnati, formerly of Milan,  passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004 at her residence. She was born at Milan on October 20, 1956 the daughter of Melvin and Marjorie Pate Martin. She was married to Don Sinclair on September 11, 1985 and he survives. Other survivors include her father Melvin Martin of Fairfield, Ohio, her mother Marjorie Gamble of Cincinnati; step-sons Greg Sinclair of Cincinnati and Doug Sinclair of Mainville, Ohio; step-daughter Debbie Fox of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and one great grand child; three brothers, Raymond Martin of Cincinnati, Charles Martin of Tullahoma, Tennessee, and James Martin of Livingston, Kentucky; one sister Susan Ogden of Cincinnati. Mrs. Sinclair was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 23rd at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Visitation will be from 11am until time of services. Cecil R. Baugh, 79, of Osgood passed away Tuesday November 16, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born at Mintenville, Kentucky on December 8, 1924 the son of John and Gertie Baugh. He was married to Mildred Brown on September 10, 1946 and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Lester Baugh and his wife Ellen of Seymour; four daughters Sonja Samples and her husband Bert of Rexville, Gia Spoor and Vern of Worthington, Ginger Bradford and Bill of Versailles, and Shawna Bushhorn and Rick of Osgood; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Edgar Baugh of Holton; two sisters Bonnie Larabee of Cincinnati and Pauline Cole of Holton. Mr. Baugh was preceded in death by his brothers Roy and Fred Baugh. He was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Baugh received the American Theatre Ribbon and the  EAME Theatre Ribbon along with three bronze stars. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 19th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Robert Harting of the First Baptist Church in Osgood officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, November 18th from 4pm to 7pm. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Evelyn Huntington, 77, of Osgood passed away Sunday, November 14, 2004 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born at Versailles on September 2, 1927 the daughter of Vaughn and Anna Prickett Hallgarth. Mrs. Huntington was a homemaker and had formerly been employed with Ohio Rod. Survivors include one daughter, Hope Schwanholt and her husband Doug of Versailles; one granddaughter Kaitlyn; three brothers, Jack Hallgarth and David Hallgarth both of Texas and Durwin Hallgarth of Hanover; two sisters, Hattie Webster of Madison, Wisconsin and Aldean Demaree of Greensburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Virginia Kennett, Helen Webster, Margaret Clayton and her brothers Robert, Lloyd, and Clayton Hallgarth.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Justin Michael Ricke, 14, of Madison and also of Osgood, passed away Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Childrens Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born at Batesville on October 21, 1990 the son of Jim and Lacie Youngman Ricke. Justin is survived by his father Jim Ricke, Sr. of Osgood; his mother and step-father Lacie and Chuck Deputy of Madison; his brother Jimmy Ricke of Osgood; step-sisters Amanda and Makenzie Deputy of Madison;  paternal grandparents Richard and Susan Ricke of Osgood; maternal grandparents Mike and Susan Youngman of Osgood; maternal great-grandparents Carl and Ruth Wenning of Osgood and Lucille Youngman of Napoleon. Justin was an eighth grade student at Soutwestern Middle School in Hanover and had attended Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School. He was a member of the Jefferson County 4-H, the American Quarter Horse Association and the National Reining Horse Association. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 11th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery at Finks Corner near Osgood. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 10th from 5pm to 8pm. Orville Crocker, 84, of the Hopewell community passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr. Crocker was born on the farm where he resided on November 6, 1919 the son of Frank and Emma Comer Crocker. He was married to June Smith on January 27, 1945 and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Nancy Thola of Osgood; three sons Merrill Crocker and Melvin Crocker both of Osgood, and Lee Crocker and his wife Nancy of Waverly, Ohio; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Floyd and Merrill Crocker and his sister Wilamette Crocker. Mr. Crocker was a 1936 graduate of Holton High School and had attended Hanover College on a football scholarship. He was also a farmer and along with his sons owned and operated Crocker’s Christmas Tree Farm. He had worked for several years as a self  employed carpenter having built many houses in the community near his home. He also was a member of the Carpenters Local 1775 of Columbus. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 7th at 2pm at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, November 6th from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell building fund in care of the funeral home.

 

Iva Johnson, 93, of Cross Plains, formerly of West Palm Beach, Florida passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Cross Plains on June 16, 1911 the daughter of Tom and Mollie Harrell Elston. She was married to Rufus Johnson and he survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Ruby McMackin of Bennington and Dorothy McMackin of Moorefield; brother-in law Glenn Edwards of Bennington along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Ollie, Wilkie, Raymond, Clyde, and Freddie Elston. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the Cross Plains Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 29th at 10:30am at the Cross Plains Baptist Church with Rev. Troy Dean officiating. Burial will  be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, October 28th from 5pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the church in care of the funeral home.

 

Russell E. Wall, 78, of Rexville passed away Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at McKinney in Lincoln County, Kentucky on September 8, 1926 the son of Noel and Viola Peck Wall. He was married to Mable Martin on November 9, 1951 and she survives. Other survivors include one son, David Wall and his wife Bonnie of Milan; two daughters, Robin Wall of Versailles and Christy Speer and her husband Rev. Casey Speer of Columbus; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two brothers, Albert Wall of Frankfort, Kentucky and Charles Wall of Hayden; two sisters, Carrie Sheene of Hustonville, Kentucky and Joyce Austin of Palm Springs, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Ollie, Bobby, Jerry, and Marvin Wall. Mr. Wall was a Navy veteran of WWII and was a member of the New Marion Baptist Church. He retired in 1984  after 44 years as an engineer with the Southern Railway and was also a commercial mink rancher. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 18th at 11am at the Tanglewood Cemetery near Versailles with Rev.Casey Speer officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, October 17th from 3pm to 5pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Wilma Kamman, 76, of Greensburg, formerly of Cross Plains passed away Sunday, October 10th at the Heritage House in  Greensburg. She was born at Vevay on January 3, 1928 the daughter of Marion and Flora Blanche Richards Warner. She was married to Estol Kamman on August 17, 1946 and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1988. Survivors include one son Ray Kamman and his wife Velma of Greensburg; three daughters, Jeraldine Morgan and her husband Richard, Ann Becht and her husband Fred all of Greensburg, Beverly Murakami of Elmhurst, Illinois; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Paul Warner of Illinois. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Kenneth, sisters Edith Clarkson and Velma Gullion, and her brother Charles Warner. Mrs. Kamman was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greensburg and a former member of St.Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dewberry. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 13th at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Mark Flory of Holy Trinity officiating. Burial will be in the St Paul Lutheran Cemetery at Dewberry. Visitation will Wednesday from 12pm until time of services. Memorials may be given to the donors choice.

 

Ethel R. Dunbar, 99, of Osgood passed away Sunday, October 10, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Delaware in Delaware Township on February 28, 1905 the daughter of Charles and Carrie Parsons Knowlton. She was married to Ralph Dunbar on June 19, 1926 and he preceded her in death on February 14, 1998. Mrs. Dunbar is survived by her son Donald Dunbar and his wife Shirley of Osgood; granddaughters Brenda Strimple and her husband Rex of Holton, Debbie Hardy and Paul of Osgood, and Lucinda Fromer and Roger of Batesville along with six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Downey and her husband Bill of Osgood. Mrs. Dunbar, along with her husband were co-owners of the Dunbar & Bultman milk plant and restaraunt in Osgood from 1939 to 1978. She was a 1923 graduate of Osgood High School and was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church and the Osgood-Versailles chapter of the Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 14th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 13th from 5pm to 8pm. Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Jack B. Webb, 89, of Versailles passed away Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the King’s Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at Columbus, Ohio on June 5, 1915 and was raised in Raver, West Virginia the son of John B. and Josephine McGovern Webb.  He was married to Imon Russell and she preceded him in death on May 27, 1995. Other survivors include one daughter Joretta Grass of Nineveh, one grandson Mark R. Crosby of Loveland, Ohio; one granddaughter, Traci Grass of Franklin, Indiana; four great-grandchildren, Joshua and Alex Crosby, Derek Burton, and Chloe Grass; his half-sister Gladys Carter of Crestview, Florida. . Mr. Webb retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground where he was director of range control and had worked with the CCC’s.   He was also a member of the Versailles Baptist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 12th at 11:00am at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be Monday, October 11th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and also from 10am until time of services Tuesday at the church.  Memorials may be given to the Versailles Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Billy Gene Strunk, 72, of Elrod passed away Sunday, October 03, 2004 at his residence. He was born at Winfield, Tennessee on August 28, 1932 the son of Beatty and Maud Goodman Strunk. He was married to Evelyn Cornett on July 12, 1956 and she survives. Other survivors include four sons: Charles Strunk, Ronald L. Strunk, Wayne Strunk all of Elrod, David Strunk and his wife Cindy of Versailles; four daughters, Wendy Bergman and her husband Steve of Milan, Joan Collins and her husband Dave of Osgood, Kathy Davidson and her husband Dale of West Harrison, and Sharon Haney and her husband Wade of Lawrenceburg; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grand; one brother Ronald D. Strunk of Milan and one sister-in-law Jaunita Strunk of Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. Mr. Strunk was an Air Force veteran and was a truck driver for Harrison Ready Mix. He was a member and co-founder of the Cavehill Church of God. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 5th at 11am at the Cavehill Church of God with Bro. Pearl Cornett officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery in Elrod. Alice L. McCoy, 79, of Olean passed away Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the Waters of Ross Manor in Dillsboro. She was born near Olean on November 7, 1924 the daughter of Herman and Hattie Pegee. She was married to R. C. McCoy on May 5, 1946 and he preceded her in death on December 3, 1973. Mrs. McCoy was a 1942 graduate of Cross Plains High School and was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean. She, along with her husband owned and operated the Versailles Implement Company in Olean for several years. She also had been employed with the US Shoe factory in Osgood and Wood Farm Supply in Versailles. Mrs. McCoy was currently serving as President of the Ripley County Historical Society and was a member of the Ripley County Extension Homemakers. She had also served as a food judge for several county fairs throughout southern Indiana for nearly 50 years. Survivors include two daughters, Pam Wygant and her husband Dean and Peggy Ehlers and her husband Robert all of Versailles; two grandchildren, Shawn Ehlers and Allison Wygant. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 2nd at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with visitation being Friday, October 1st from 4pm to 7pm. Burial will be in St.Peter’s Cemetery in Olean. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Grace M. Eaton, 82, of Versailles passed away Saturday, September 18, 2004 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. She was born at Defeated Creek in Letcher County, Kentucky on March 31, 1922 the daughter of Arber and Ann Halcomb Sumner. She was married to Jesse Eaton on June 13, 1942 and he preceded her in death on March 7, 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Melitta Hooton and Wanda Bennett both of Madison; grandchildren Dana Hooton of Winston-Salem, NC, David Hooton and Traci Miller both  of Charleston, SC, Laura Hooton of Indianapolis, Jeff Jones of Elkhart, Matt Jones of Casopolis, and Jill Humphrey of Hanover along with nine great-grandchildren; two sisters Violet Powers of Muncie and Thelma Bowers of Winter Haven, Florida. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Mary Giroud and Louise Slaton. Mrs. Eaton was a homemaker and had been employed with the Delaney Wood Heel Factory in Versailles. She was a 54 year member of the Versailles Baptist Church and a life member of the Leora Weare American Legion Auxillary in Versailles. Visitation will be Monday, September 20th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Halcomb officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Margaret M. Peetz, 84, of Napoleon passed away Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. She was born near Batesville on December 20, 1919 the daughter of John and Elizabeth Fremdling Klusman. She was married to Clyde Peetz on January 25, 1947 and he preceded her in death on December 16, 1991. Mrs Peetz was a 1938 graduate of Napoleon High School and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon. She was a homemaker, a former  employee of Seagrams and had driven a school bus for the Jac-Cen-Del school system for several years. Survivors include one son John Peetz and his wife Marilyn of Osgood; two granddaughters, Amanda Comer and her husband Blake of Osgood and Julie Ann Obendorf and her husband John of Osgood. Mrs. Peetz was also preceded in death by her parents and her grandson Doug Peetz. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 17th at 11am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Donald Manning, 72, of Versailles passed away Sunday, September 12, 2004 at his residence. He was born at Mace, Indiana on April 9, 1932 the son of Russie and Mary Royse Manning. He was married to Shirley Elliott on April 9, 1993 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Rusty Manning of Kokomo and Keith Manning and his wife Diana of Oxford; three daughters, Terry Dahlgren and her husband Dan of Cicero, Brenda Roe and Dan of Lafayette, and Pam Wagner and Charley of Baltimore;

One stepson, Brad Walker and his wife Rebecca of Louisville, one step daughter Fern Baumer and her husband John of Batesville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irene Haynes of Bradenton, Florida, Vada Isenberg of Jackson, Tennessee, and Tona Pullen of Plant City, Florida. Mr. Manning was an Engineer for the Chrysler Corp. of Kokomo for 31 years retiring in 1987. He was also an Air Force veteran of Korea. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home of Versailles was in charge of arrangements.

 

John H. White, Jr., 65, of Holton passed away Thursday, September 09, 2004 at his home. He was born at Rising Sun on November 17, 1938 the son of John H. and Gertrude Ellis White. He was married to Carolyn Johnson on July 18, 1959 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Dwayne White, Franklin White and his wife Pamela all of Holton; one daughter Tammie Stewart of Noblesville; granddaughters Amanda Fronek, Heather Green, Erika Wright, and Hilary White; great-grandsons Andrew Roembke and Aidan Green; three brothers, Howard “Butch” White and his wife Darlene of Rising  Sun, Clarence White and Vonda of Lawrenceburg, and Charlie White and Veeta of Rising Sun; three sisters, Velma Vest of Aurora, Esther Miller and her husband Harry of Rising Sun, Henrietta Lay and Stanley of Holton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son John H. “Bub” White III, brothers James and George Robert White and his sister Anna Elizabeth White. Mr. White was a 1957 graduate of  Patriot High School and was a Navy veteran. He retired from Cummins Engine in Columbus in 1996 after 30 years of service. He was also a member of the DWI at Cummins. Funeral services will be Monday, September 13th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev.David Shivers of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the New Cemetery at Rising Sun. Visitation will be Sunday, September 12th from 3pm to 7pm. William R. Franklin, 76, of Holton passed away Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Indiana. He was born in the Forest Corner community near Holton on February 7, 1928 the son of Glenn and Josie Stratton Franklin. He was married to Elsie Andress on February 28th, 1949 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Gerald and his wife Lois, Dennis and his wife Dixie all of Holton; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother Charles Franklin and his wife Bonnie of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Elmer. Mr. Franklin was a 1946 graduate of Holton High School and was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in Guam. He was a farmer and worked as a rural letter carrier for 31 years having retired in 1984. Mr. Franklin was a 65 year member of the Holton Christian Church.  Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 5th at 2:00pm at the Holton Christian Church with Robert McCreary of the Holton Christian Church and Dale Day of the Versailles Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, September 4th from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Ronnie G. Walcott, 57, of Milan passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Dillsboro Manor. He was born at Milan on May 17, 1947 the son of Floyd and Pearl Eaglin Walcott. He was married to Jean Cottingham on July 20, 1978 and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Wagner and her husband Aaron of Moores Hill, Denise Walcott of Milan, and Jill Bonar and her husband Greg of Milan; three grandchildren Lani, Jacob, and Daniel Bonar; one brother Jerry Walcott of Lawrenceburg; four sisters, Cosette Heine of Lawrenceburg, Rosalie Stevens of New Richmond, Ohio, Lois West of Indianapolis, and Marna Ross of Manchester. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dilver. Mr. Walcott was a 1965 graduate of Milan High School and was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He retired from Seagrams in 2003 after 37 years and was a member of the Milan American Legion and the Ripley County Voiture 40 & 8. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 31st from 5pm to 8pm. Burial will be in the Craven Cemetery in Milan with military graveside rites by the Milan American Legion. Memorials may be given to Milan Rescue 30 in care of the funeral home.

 

Bernice C. Tingle, 84, of Benham passed away Saturday August 28, 2004 at her residence. She was born near Moorefield in Switzerland County on January 13, 1920 the daughter of Charles and Lena Tingle Monroe. She was married  to Alton Tingle on November 15, 1960 and he survives. Other survivors include three sons, William Herman, Jr. and his wife Loan of Dallas, Bob Herman and his wife Joanne of Trafalgar, and Don Herman and his wife Sue of Phoenix; one brother Charles Monroe of Rexville; two sisters Lottie Butler and Juanita Wilson both of Phoenix; her mother-in-law Mrs. Elsie Tingle of Osgood; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Evelyn Marie Ross, brothers William, Adolphus, and Kenneth Monroe and her sisters Margaret Washburn and Geneva Monroe. Mrs. Tingle was a 1938 graduate of Manual High School in Indianapolis and retired from Indiana Bell in 1961. Graveside services will be held Monday, August 30th at 3pm at the Benham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army or the Benham Cemetery.

 

Rhoda Davis, 94, of Lawrenceburg, formerly of Holton passed away Sunday, August 23, 2004 at the Pine Knoll Assisted Living Center in Lawrenceburg. She was born at Sexton Creek in Clay County, Kentucky on January 10, 1910 the daughter of Marian and Sarah Jane Allen Baker. She was married to Calhoun Davis on August 21, 1933 and he preceded her in death on January 6, 2001. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and had also worked at the Delaney Wood Heel Factory in Versailles. Survivors include one son, Ronald Davis and his wife Susan of Lawrenceburg; one daughter Janice Winn of Miami Lakes, Florida; one grandson David Winn and his wife Traci of Miami Shores, Florida and one granddaughter Darcey Winn of Miami Lakes, Florida; one great-granddaughter Madison Winn; one sister Edith McIntosh of Fairfield, Ohio; three brothers Hiram Baker of Versailles, Edward Baker of Cincinnati, and Clayton Baker of Bloomington. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother David Baker and her sisters Sudie Reed and Thelma Dunn. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 26th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Richard McClure of the First Baptist Church of Dillsboro  officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Thursday from 10am until time of services. Mary Louise Gunter, 88, of Holton passed away Friday, August 20, 2004, at her residence in Holton. She was born in Lebanon, Kentucky on January 29th  1916 the daughter of James and Berthinee Lanom Simpson. She was married to Charles Gunter on August 11, 1934 and he precedes her in death. Mrs. Gunters survivors include four sons Roy of Holton, Willis of Butlerville, Gene of North Vernon, Ray of Holton; three daughters, Lonnie Tyler of Holton, Susan Rice of Holton, Brenda Sandlin of Butlerville; twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-one great-grand, and two great great grandchildren. Mrs. Gunter was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sons Robert, James, Charles, Daniel and her daughter, Linda Hurst, six brothers, two sisters, one grandchild and one great grandchild. She was a member of the Holton Wesleyan Church. Mrs. Gunter was a homemaker.  Funeral services will be held Monday, August 23rd  at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Margaret E. Clayton, 79, of Holton passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Versailles on April 5, 1925 the daughter of Roy and Bernice Ruth Brown Lockridge. She was married to Cecil Clayton on January 30, 1948 and he preceded her in death on December 26, 1975. Survivors include four sons, Paul Clayton and his wife Sandy, William Clayton, Joseph Clayton and his wife Vickie all of Holton, and Timothy Clayton and Kathy of Commiskey; two daughters, Barbara Hall and her husband James of Holton and Ruth Hill and Clarence of Versailles; eighteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; three half-brothers, David Hallgarth of Lubbock, Texas, Jack Hallgarth of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Durwin Hallgarth of Hanover; two half-sisters, Norma Brown of Indianapolis and Dorothy Furnish of Madison. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Josie Clayton and grandson Andrew Hill. Mrs. Clayton was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School and had worked as a cook at New Marion High School. She was a member of the Holton Christian Church and retired from Muscatatuck after 25 years as a QMA. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 20th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Robert McCreary of the Holton Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 19th from 5pm to 8pm at the funeral home. John Gilbert Hunter, 87, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away December 5, 2003 in Phoenix. He was born in Versailles on December 10, 1916 the son of Tony and Eva Mae Stewart Hunter. He was married to Catherine Louise Hunter in 1941 and she preceded him in death on February 4, 1996. Survivors include one son, Thomas E. Hunter of Phoenix, one daughter Janet Anne Hunter of Cincinnati. He  was also preceded in death by his parents and his sister Virginia Rosbach. Mr. Hunter was a 1934 graduate of Versailles High School and a 1938 graduate of Indiana University. He was an Army veteran of WWII and had taught physics and general science in northern Illinois for several years. Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 14th at 1pm at the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Local arrangements were handled by the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home of Versailles.

 

George R. Stegner, 80, of Versailles passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born on May 13, 1924 the son of Virgil and Madeline Decker Stegner. He was married to Audrey Jackson on August 17, 1947 and she preceded him in death on February 7, 2000. Survivors include one son, Gary Stegner and his wife Sally of Versailles; grandchildren Jeremy Stegner and Elizabeth Stegner. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Virgil. Mr. Stegner was a 1942 graduate of Holton High School and had attended Franklin College and Indiana State University. He was a registered X ray technician and had retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground. Mr. Stegner was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church, Versailles F&AM #7 and was a 33rd degree Mason. He also was a member of the Murat Shrine, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, the Ripley County Historical Society, the York Rite, and had been named a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Stegner had served on the Versailles Town Board for 12 years and had served on the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 11th at 10:30am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Rev. Michael Hendrix officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 10th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Masonic services by the Versailles Masonic Lodge at 7:30pm. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Tyson United Methodist Church or the Versailles Masonic Lodge in care of the funeral home.

 

Woodrow McGee, 91, of Cross Plains passed away Monday, August 2, 2004 at the Waters of Clifty Falls in Madison.  He was born in Cross Plains, Indiana on December 6, 1912, the son of Albert and Lucinda Conyers McGee. He was married to Alma Palmer on July 27th 1939 and she preceded him in death on August 14th, 2000. Other survivors include nieces and nephews. He graduated from Versailles High School in 1930 and received his teaching certificate from Central Normal in Danville.  Mr. McGee taught school at New Marion and Cross Plains. He was a member of the Versailles F&AM # 7, the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and the Versailles Order of the Eastern Star.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 5th at 11:00am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Charles Cole of the Dabney Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be Thursday August 5th from 10:00am until the time of services. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. William L. Hankins, 79, of Cross Plains passed away Sunday, August 1, 2004 at the Thornton Terrace in Hanover. He was born near Canaan on September 7, 1924 the son of William F. and Myrtle Daleglish Hankins. Mr. Hankins was employed for 38 years as a sales clerk for McAlpins in Cincinnati and was a member of the Cross Plains Baptist Church. Survivors include three sisters, Esther Hoffman of Canaan, Freeda Hansmann of Versailles, and Maxine Roberts of Kent along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Mitchell, Loren, and David Hankins, and his sisters Marjorie Mathews, Lela Elston, and Lauretta Fleek. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 4th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Pete Sinclair of the Cross Plains Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 3rd from 5pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Larry (Shag) Pickett, Sr., 61, of the Flat Rock community near Osgood passed away Saturday, July 31, 2004 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born near Osgood on October 22, 1942 the son of Robert and Zelma Baldwin Pickett. He was married to Carmen Jackson on March 13, 1987 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Larry Pickett, Jr.  and Dennis Bushhorn, Jr.both of Osgood; four daughters, Lori Voegele and her fiancé Roger Eckstein of Enochsburg, Joy Pickett-Zapfe of Osgood, Heidi Lovins and her husband Steve of Aurora, and Maggie Pickett at home; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Carolyn Schmidt of Guilford and father-in-law John Jackson of Lake City, Tennessee; three sisters, Eileen Levell of Daleville, Maxine Young and her husband Alvin of Osgood, and Evelyn Hull and Milton of Columbus; sister-in-law Clara Hull of Greensburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Elvan. Mr. Pickett was a 1960 graduate of Napoleon High School and was a member of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church. He was a 37 year employee of Cummins Engine retiring in 1999. He was also a member of the ABATE of Indiana, Sons of the American Legion at Osgood, Amvets of Osgood, and was currently serving on the board of directors of the Holton Community Water Corporation. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd at 11am at the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 2nd from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Rescue 69, or the church.

 

Violet Bare McClain, 92, of Versailles, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Manderly Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near St. Paul, Indiana on March 14, 1912 the daughter of John and Lillie Rutherford Rathburn. She was married to Irvan Bare who preceded her in death in 1967. Other survivors include one daughter, Jean Kuhen of Oregon; one son William Rathburn of Green Valley, Arizona; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Don Bare, her sisters Lula Watson, Edith Peters, and Mary Thomas and her brothers Lawrence, Roy, John, Russell, Edgar, and Gerald Rathburn. Mrs. McClain worked at the five and dime in Osgood, Ensingers Furniture Store in Osgood and Rices Grocery in Osgood for twenty years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Kingston since 1931 and attended the Versailles Baptist Church regularly.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29th at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mark Walker of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood. Memorials may be given to the Mud Pike Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Jeanette "Janet" Druschel, 72, of Holton, Indiana passed away Saturday, July 24, 2004 at the Kings Daughter's Hospital in Madison. She was born in Manchester, Kentucky on March 13, 1932 the daughter of Robert and Lizzie Keith Sizemore. She was married to Frances W. Druschel in 1950 and he survives. Other survivors  include three daughters, Roseann Becktell of Versailles, Linda White of Osgood, and Patricia Druschel of North Vernon; one son Ronald of Holton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Woody Sizemore of Holton; six sisters, Esther Baker of Holton, Martha Scott of Springfield, Virginia, Mayme Renfro of Holton, Myrtle Lainhart of Holton, Allie Hacker of Versailles, and Shirley Keeton of Versailles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Diane Marie, her son, Frankie Bernard, her sister Virgie Baker and her brothers Craft Sizemore, Frank Sizemore, Vernon Sizemore and John Sizemore. Mrs. Druschel was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 27th at 1 pm at the Holton United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Hadler officiating. Christina “Christie” Dilk Kostin, 36, of Elrod passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004 at the University Of Cincinnati Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.She was born in Anderson, Indiana on January 30, 1968, the daughter of Marvin Dilk of Holton, and Karen Eggenburger, who precedes her. She was married to Aaron Kostin on October 4th 2001 and he survives. Other survivors include one son Marc Anthony Dilk of Edinburg, Indiana. Other survivors include her brother Kevin Lee Dilk of Holton, Paternal Grandparents, Nelson and Dorothy Dilk of Versailles.  Mrs. Kostin worked for Ernie’s Pizza in Versailles. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21st at 7:00pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bonnie J. Patrick, 75, of Holton passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born in Moores Hill, Indiana on May 5, 1929 the daughter of William and Sophia (Carter) Peebles. She was married to Earnest Patrick on October 7, 1945 and he survives. Other survivors include one son William Earnest of Holton; two daughters; Janet Forwalt of Holton, Joyce Horn of Holton; one brother Jewel Peebles of Covington, Kentucky; three sisters, Gladys Foster of Holton, Pauline Britt of Versailles, Elnora Springer of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Virgil, three sisters; Emmaline Peebles, Geraldine Bruce, Evelyn Knuxall.    . She was a member of the Cedar Creek Community Church.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20th at 10:00am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Garland Rudd officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery at Versailles Visitation will be Monday, July 19th from 5pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Elmer Sporleder, 80, of Zenas passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004 at the Jennings Health Care Center in North Vernon. He was born near Zenas on March 30, 1924 the son of Harlan and Eliza Talbot Sporleder. He was married to Mae Stroup on December 1, 1946 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Joseph Sporleder and his wife Sandy of Holton; three daughters, Bonita Hopkins and her husband Johnny of Indianapolis, Cathy Meisberger and Dan of Holton, and Pam Simmons and Mason of North Vernon; ten grandchildren and two great-grand. Mr. Sporleder was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Oliver and Lester Sporleder and his sisters Gladys Holcomb and Louella Murdock. Mr. Sporleder was a 1942 graduate of Zenas High School and was a farmer. He was a member of the Zenas Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of WWII where received the WWII Victory Ribbon and the Army of Occupied Germany Medal. Mr. Sporleder was a farmer and had been a school bus driver in the Holton and South Ripley school systems. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 19th at 10am at the Zenas Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Suits officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 18th from 2pm to 6pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Jennings County or the Zenas Baptist Church.

 

Marie Roberts, 85, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Napoleon passed away Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the Reid Hospital in Richmond. She was born in Concord, Kentucky on May 1, 1919 the daughter of Albert and Fannie Mae Craig Doyle. She was married to Malcolm Roberts in 1938 and he survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Sandy Smith of Phoenix; one son Donald Roberts of Napoleon; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Doyle and his wife Verena of Connersville, Walter Doyle and Jean of Connersville; two sisters, Ruth Shepherd and her husband Lawrence of Connersville and Hazel Comer and Norman of Greensburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Sharon Hutto, her sister Thelma Doyle and her brother Lawrence Doyle and one great grandchild. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 13th at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Rand Hooton officiating. Visitation will be from 1pm until time of services. Hilda May Hyatt, 95, of Osgood passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born near Rexville on February 26, 1909 the daughter of Jesse and Minda Ford Lewis. She was married to Edmond Hyatt on February 28, 1935 and he preceded her in death on February 15, 1997. Survivors include one son, Dale Hyatt and his wife Ruth of Osgood; one grandson Benji Hyatt. She was preceded in death by her brothers Ernest and Robert Lewis and sisters Abbie Myers and Grace Sproessig. Mrs. Hyatt was a homemaker and a 1927 graduate of New Marion High School. She also had attended Ball State University and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Church. Mrs. Hyatt enjoyed gardening and sewing. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 12th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev.Garland Rudd of the Cedar Creek Community Church. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Ray L. Orman, 64, of Versailles passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004 at his residence. He was born at Clay City, Indiana on January 21, 1940 the son of Martin and Mary Staley Orman. He was married to Margaret Ruch on June 20, 1962 and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Lyn Hart and companion Jody Hensley of Versailles, and Greta Rae Glotzbach and her husband Kelly of Mitchell; grandchildren Matthew and Emily Prarat, Rachel Hensley, Skye, Zane, and Preston Glotzbach; one brother Mark Orman of Clay City; one sister, Linda Lowe and her husband Larry of Clay City. Mr. Orman was a 1958 graduate of Clay City High School. He received his Bachelors degree from Purdue University in 1962 in Agriculture Economics and his Masters Degree from Purdue in 1966 in Agriculture Education. He was general manager of the Ripley County Farm Bureau from 1971 to 1996 and worked for Purdue University as a County Extension Director and educator in Clay and Franklin Counties. Mr. Orman also was a sponsor for the Hassmer Hilltoppers 4H Club in Versailles, a member of the Versailles Lions Club since 1972, a member of the Clay City Church of Christ, and had formerly served on the Ripley County Fair Board and the South Ripley School Board. He also bred and raised Shorthorn cattle and was a member of the Indiana and American Shorthorn Associations. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 7th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery near Versailles. Herschel Adams, 65, of Versailles, formerly of Osgood, passed away Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born in London, Kentucky on November 26, 1938 the son of Bev and Sally Powers Adams. He was married to Teresa Jane Kemker and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Kevin Adams and his wife Gina of Cocord, North Carolina and Alan Adams of Florida; one daughter Phyllis Holman of Versailles; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren;  two brothers, Ray Adams of Versailles and Ben Adams of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, John, Alvin, Jim, Earl, Alfred, and Chester Adams and three sisters, Gretha Webb, Dorothy and Flora Adams. Mr. Adams was a 1958 graduate of New Marion High School and had been employed with Church Brothers Body Shop in Indianapolis for 32 years. He also owned and operated Adams Seal Coating and had done substitute teaching at South Ripley High School. He was a member of the Suburban Baptist Church in Greenwood and attended the Dabney Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 1st at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Charles Cole of the Dabney Baptist Church officiating. Sue Ellen Williams Rice, 47, of Cleves, Ohio, formerly of Holton passed away Friday, June 18, 2004 at her residence. She was born at Batesville on April 17, 1957 the daughter of Gerald and Carolyn Schlotman Williams. Ms. Rice attended Holton Elementary School and was a 1975 graduate of South Ripley High School. She was a homemaker and had worked in restaurant management for Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken and was a member of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church. Survivors include her parents Gerald and Carolyn Williams of Greensburg; three sons, Steven Rice and his wife Shannon of Versailles, David and Tracy Rice of Osgood, and Kyle Rice of Ft.Sill, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Autstin, McKenzie, and Skyler Rice; paternal grandmother Martha Williams of Osgood, maternal grandmother Madge Schlotman of Holton; three brothers, Mark Williams of Edinburg, Steve Williams of Atlanta, and Andy Williams of Greensburg; two sisters, Beth Hewitt of Batesville and Lisa Granger of Greensburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 21, 2004 at 2pm at the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church near Osgood with Rev.Carolyn Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Jack L. Miller, 74, of Versailles, passed away Friday, June 11, 2004 at the residence of his nephew Dennis Hoeferkamp near New Marion with whom he made his home. . Mr. Miller was born near Napoleon on March 4, 1930 the son of Oral and Hilda Schmele Miller. Survivors include his step-mother, Mrs. Mae Miller of Versailles; one sister Betty Hoeferkamp Skelton of Versailles and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his half-brother Charles R. Miller.  Mr. Miller was a 1947 graduate of Versailles High School and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War where he was stationed in New Foundland. He was a 47 year employee of Seagrams Distillery in Lawrenceburg. Mr. Miller was a member of the Aurora American Legion and the Aurora Masonic Lodge. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 15th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Dale Day of the Versailles Church of Christ and Rev. Howard Klusman, 77, of Versailles passed away Wednesday June 9, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Ohio County on August 5, 1926 the son of Martin and Anna Torwelle Klusman. He was married to Joyce Hampton on June 27, 1953 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Mark Klusman and his wife Ann of Versailles; one grandson Dominick Klusman; one brother Gilbert Klusman of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Adina Jacobitz of Kennesaw, Nebraska and Velora Pollert of Seymour. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leroy Klusman. Mr. Klusman was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the 1st Air Repair and Supply Detachment in the Phillipines and Okinawa. He was a farmer and had driven school buses in the Holton, Cross Plains, and South Ripley school districts. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dewberry and the Brown Township American Legion. Mr. Klusman also enjoyed antique tractors. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 12th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Donald Sauls officiating. Burial will be in the St. Pauls Cemetery at Dewberry with military graveside rites by the Brown Township American Legion. Visitation will be Friday, June 11th from 5pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Robert W. Stoever, 69, of Cross Plains passed away Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the Dillsboro Manor in Dillsboro. He was born near Friendship on October 16, 1934 the son of Donald and Bessie Montgomery Stoever. Mr. Stoever was a farmer and a veteran of the Korea era. He had made his home with Chester and Margaret Vogel and family near Cross Plains. Besides the Vogels, he is survived by his sister Rosemary Meredith of Cadiz, Kentucky. Boyd Fields, 81, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette. Mr. Fields was a resident of the Veterans Home and was formerly of Napoleon and Versailles. He was born at Livingston, Kentucky on September 7, 1922 the son of Stephen and Julia Dees Fields. He was married to Mary Virginia Carr on December 7, 1942 and she preceded him in death on March 5, 1998.  Survivors  include two sons, Steven Fields and his wife Rosemary of Montgomery, Texas and Rick Fields and his wife Mary of Dillsboro; four granddaughters, Julie Fields of Seattle, Washington, Susan Fields of Brooklyn, New York, Erin Fields Kierner of Columbus, Ohio, and Ashley Fields of Indianapolis. Mr. Fields was a WWII veteran having served in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946. He was a submarine spotter on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and was working shore patrol duty in Times Square, New York on VJ Day. He had farmed in the Reddington and Seymour areas and had worked as a foreman for the Stadler Meat Packing plant in Columbus. From 1970 to 1980 he, along with his wife, operated Field’s IGA store in Napoleon and from 1980 to 1985 they operated Field’s IGA in Osgood. Mr. Fields was a member of the Dabney Baptist Church and the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 5th at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Charles Cole of the Dabney Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion.  Visitation will be Friday, June 4th from 6pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Kenneth Doan, 61, of Milan passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 at his residence. He was born near Deleware on June 15, 1942 the son of Edward and Edna Schutte Doan. He was married to Pauline Freytag on September 4, 1965 and she survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Valery Hornberger and her husband Kris, Cheryl Vogelsang and Michael, Jill Meyer and Chad, and Joyce Pindell and Brian all of Milan; ten grandchildren; one brother Eugene Doan of Chandler, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Mr. Doan was employed with McKittrick  Contracting in Milan and was retired from Seagrams in Lawrenceburg. He was a Navy veteran of Vietnam and a member of the Milan American Legion. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29th at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Jr. Schutte officiating.  Visitation will be from noon until time of services on Saturday. Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood. Military graveside rites will be given by the Milan American Legion.  Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Childrens Fund.

 

Matilda “Tilly” Granger, 79, of Osgood passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was born in Osgood on October 6, 1924 the daughter of James and Emma Hoover Corson. She was married to Lawrence Granger on December 27, 1947 and he survives. Other survivors include four sons,  Dennis Granger and his wife Lisa of Greensburg, Kenny Granger and Janet of Indianapolis, Rick Granger and Kathy of Ft.Wayne, and Jack Granger of Milan; one daughter, Kathy Hansen and her husband Kevin of Deputy; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Granger was a lifelong resident of Osgood and was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church. She had served as an EMT with Rescue 69 for 13 years. She had also served as a den mother with Cub Scout pack 38 in Osgood and had volunteered at Buckeye Village in Osgood. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 11am at the Osgood United Methodist Church with Rev. Rob Rixman, Rev. Wm. Hoopes, and Rev. Gatha Eha officiating. Benjamin S. Stephenson, 92, of Elrod passed away Thursday May 13, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born on July 1, 1911 near Chatham in Washington County, Alabama the son of Peter and Eva Mellon Stephenson. He was married to Elaine Kindle on January 1, 1940 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Larry Stephenson of Elrod and Ronald Stephenson and his wife Pam of Kent; one daughter, Glenda Kelly and her husband Robert of Scipio; two grandchildren, Brian Kelly and Brianna Stephenson. Mr. Stephenson was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters and four brothers. He was a 33 year employee of Schenleys in Lawrenceburg retiring in 1974. He had also worked on a government light tender boat on the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15th at 2pm at the Strattton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bruce Fitzsimmons of the Washington Baptist Church officiating. Cheri L. Lachenman , 55, of Cross Plains passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Cincinnati on April 27, 1949 the daughter of Robert Lee and Geneva Shell Smith. Ms. Lachenman was a realtor with Help-U-Sell Realty in Aurora. She is survived by her fiancé Chris Bram of Cross Plains; her mother Geneva Smith of Cincinnati; two sons, Shawn Lachenman and Jesse Lachenman both of Rising Sun; one daughter, Kathryn Lachenman also of Rising Sun and one sister, Kim Cox of Cincinnati. . Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Shirley A. Cook, 58, of Elrod passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Cincinnati on November 28, 1945 the daughter of Clyde and Melissa Lawson Cole. She was married to Dan Cook on December 23, 1992 and he survives. Other survivors include two step-sons, Jason Cook and Tom Cook both of Cincinnati; one step-daughter Christy Waffle of Hamilton; three grandchildren Michael Cook, Britney and Codi Waffle; one step-sister Donna Hercamp and one step-brother Jerry Hercamp. She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Cole and her sister JoAnn Adkins. Mrs. Cook was a 25 year employee of Frischs of Lawrenceburg and was a member of the Washington Baptist Church. Orville Martin, 83, of Versailles passed away Sunday, May 2, 2004 at his residence. He was born at Warsaw, Kentucky on May 7, 1920 the son of J.C. and Ella Mae Hussong Martin. He was married to JoAnn Kohler on January 11, 1963 and she survives. Other survivors include three sons, David Martin and his wife Suzanne of Versailles, Gary Martin and Kathy of Milton, Kentucky, and Robert and Nancy Martin of Madison; one daughter, Carolyn Jeanie Stroobandt of Union, Michigan; two step-sons, Ricky Simone of North Vernon and Mike Simone of Texas; one step-daughter, Sharon Winfield of Texas; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Woodrow Martin, one sister Pearl Thomas, step-son Russell Simone and grandson Christopher Martin. Mr. Martin was formerly employed with the Halcomb Home Center in Versailles and had served as dog warden for Ripley County since 1982. He also was a former employee of  Switzerland County Highway Department and had farmed in Ripley and Switzerland Counties. Mr. Martin was an Army veteran of WWII and had received the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupational Japan Medal. He was a member of the Shelby Christian Church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Earl Thomas officiating. Deloris Summers, 96. of the Hopewell community passed away Friday, April 30, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born in the Hopewell community near Holton on February 10, 1908 the daughter of Clarence and Bessie Grossman Toops. She was married to Daay Summers on February 13, 1926 and he preceded her in death in 1967. Mrs. Summers was a homemaker and had been a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church since 1924. Survivors include her daughter-in-law Shirley Summers of Osgood; six grandchildren, Denver Summers, Jr. and his wife Mary of Osgood, Terry Summers of Holton, Chris Summers and Jennifer of Florence, Kentucky, Sharon Summers of Osgood, Scott Summers of Osgood, and Stacy Stater and Brian of Noblesville; one brother, Donald Toops and his wife Molly of Osgood, and one sister-in-law Barbara Toops of Edinburgh; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Denver Lee Summers and her brother Dallas Toops. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 4th at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilbur “Bud” Scudder, 79, of Versailles passed away Wednesday, April 28. 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born near Mt.Sterling in Switzerland County on August 20, 1924 the son of Neely and Arizona Colon Scudder. He was married to Marcella Dresselhaus and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Steve Scudder and his wife Julie of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Maura and Kevin Scudder; one brother, Neely Scudder, Jr. of Lawrenceburg; two sisters, Delores Tague of Vevay and Lorraine Weber of Dumfries, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Muriel Sigmon, Leo Dunning, Helen Wise, Frances Scudder, and Maxine Weaver. Mr. Scudder was an Army veteran of WWII and had served as an anti-tank gunner in the 4th division. He landed on Utah Beach on D-Day where he was wounded and was captured by the Germans and  spent six months in a German prisoner of war camp. Mr. Scudder received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, three Oak Leaf Clusters and the P.O.W. Medal. He was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church at Friendship and also the Vevay VFW. He and his wife had owned the Siekerman General Store in Friendship and from 1951 to 1971 he was employed with the Jefferson Proving Ground. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes and Rev. John Brooks officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Olean. Visitation will be Friday, April 30th from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Ruth R. Napier, 83, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Milton, Indiana on June 19, 1920, the daughter of Ernest and Lena Berry Moore. She was married to Estille Napier and he preceded her in death in 1973. Mrs. Napier was a homemaker and had formerly worked for New Horizons. Survivors include three sons; Dennis Napier of Ft.Pierce, Florida, Ricky Napier of Norwood, Ohio, and Willie Napier of Versailles; five daughters, Sondra Goble of Cambridge City, Nancy Daugherty and Diane Atkinson both of Versailles, Cheryl Rogers of Greensburg, and Betty Foster of Vevay; one brother Paul Moore of Centerville and one sister Doris Hoover of Florida and also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Linda Kay Dismore, and five brothers, Bob, Abe, Cecil, John, and Ceber Moore. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 24th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery inVersailles. Lois Parker, 86, of Indianapolis, formerly of Versailles, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the Morristown Manor in Morristown. She was born at Elmira, Illinois on August 19, 1917 the daughter of Charles and Marian Grieve Welch. She was married to  Robert Parker on August 2, 1941 and he preceded her in death on March 15, 1988. She was a 1935 graduate of Kewanee High School in Kewanee, Illinois and graduated from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois in 1939 with a Bachelors degree in business.  She was a homemaker and had worked as a secretary at the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles from 1967 to 1983. She was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles and was a life member of the Versailles American Legion Auxillary. Survivors include three sons; Richard Parker and his wife Linda of Morristown, Jack Parker and Theresa of Versailles, and William Parker of Indianapolis; three daughters, Ellen Bloomer and her husband Morris of New Palestine, Mary Key and Ronald of Springfield, Ohio, and Peggy Steckbeck and Tom of Indianapolis; eleven grandchildren and one sister, Charlotte Wilkinson of Wyoming, Illinois. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17th at 11am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Rev. Mike Hendrix officiating.  Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be held Friday, April 16th from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Legion Auxillary services at 7:30pm. Ilene McGee, 83, of Friendship passed away Monday, April 12, 2004 at the Waters of Ross Manor at Dillsboro. She was born at Friendship on January 11, 1921 the daughter of Fred and Erma Damon Hartig. She was married to Dale McGee on October 22, 1949 and he preceded her in death on February 19, 2003. Mrs. McGee was a homemaker and had worked the admission gate at the NMLRA in Friendship for 35 years. She is survived by her son Kenneth McGee and his wife Judy of Cross Plains; grandson Kevin McGee and his wife Danielle of Pleasant and her great-grandson Logan McGee. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at 2pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes of the Bear Creek Baptist Church officiating. . Lisa Franklin, 41, of Austin, formerly of Holton, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2004 at the Scott County Hospital in Scottsburg. She was born at Batesville on February 7, 1963 the daughter of Gene and Shirley Estell Franklin. Ms. Franklin was a 1981 graduate of South Ripley High School and attended Franklin College where she played basketball and softball. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in park management  from Ball State in 1985and later from Vincennes University with a degree in physical therapy. She worked as a physical therapist for the St. Vincent Jennings Community Hospital in North Vernon. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. Survivors include her companion Chrissy Anderson; parents; Gene and Shirley Franklin of the Hopewell community; children Chad Anderson and Sammy Prather at home; her paternal grandmother Mrs. Ida Franklin of the Hopewell community; one brother Darrell Franklin of Holton; two nephews, one niece, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 12, 2004 at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev.David Shivers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Blanche R.Copeland , 65, of Madison passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Harrison, Ohio on February 23, 1939 the daughter of Benjamin and Pearl Mae Huneycutt Ballard. She was married to Francis Copeland on July 13, 1957 and he preceded her in death on May 30, 2001. Mrs. Copeland was a homemaker and a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Madison. She is survived by one son, Jerry Copeland of Merritt Island, Florida; three daughters, Diane Greene and her husband Jeff of Henryville, Denise Hester and Michael of Gadsden, Alabama, and Debbie Greer and Paul of Madison; eight grandchildren; five sisters, Eva Mae Doerflein of Connersville, Bertha Edwards of North Bend, Dorothy Smith of Cincinnati, Delores DeNardis of Daytona, Florida, and Myrtle Weiskittel of Palm Coast, Florida; three brothers, Jack Ballard of Greendale, Robert Ballard of Michigan City, and Wilbur Ballard of Palm Coast, Florida. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 30 at 12pm at the Cross Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Joel Almaroad of the Grace Baptist Church officiating. William Wesley (Tucker) Boyd, 82, of Elrod passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison.  He was born near Elrod on October 18, 1921 the son of Samuel and Hattie Calendar Boyd. Mr. Boyd was a farmer and retired from the Milan Furniture factory in 1980 after 26 years. He is survived by two sisters, Rubie Boyd of Elrod and Rozetta Bradley of Rising Sun. He was preceded in death by his brothers Raymond, Orvin, and Thurman Boyd and his sister Edith Henschen. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 12th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bruce Fitzsimmons of the Washington Baptist Church officiating. Eva June Hansen, 87, of Versailles passed away Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Waters of Ross Manor in Dillsboro.  She was born near Holton on June 14, 1916 the daughter of Elbridge and Erma Pratt Hammon. She was married to Harlan Michael on July 3, 1937 and he preceded her in death in 1962. She was then married to John Hansen on June 14, 1975 and he preceded her in death on December 30, 1980. Mrs. Hansen was a homemaker, a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and the Riley Cheer Guild. She was a seamstress and a 1935 graduate of Holton High School.   Survivors include three sons, William Michael of Madesto, California, John Michael of Los Angeles, and Dr. Fred Michael of Charleston, South Carolina; two daughters, Virginia Holmgren of Lake Placid, Florida and Nancy Michael of Batesville; eight grandchildren; two brothers, John Hammon of Cincinnati and Frank Hammon of Missouri; two sisters, Lucille Schlotman of Versailles and Dorothy Kimball of Holton.She was also preceded in death by her son Thomas Michael, her parents, her brothers Rufus Hammon and Norman Hammon and her sisters Maybeth DeBurger and Blanche Ross. Virginia (Jenny) Hopkins, 85, of Holton passed away Thursday, February 19, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born at Vergie in Knott County, Kentucky on October 31, 1918 the daughter of Harrison and Mary Hall. She was married to Robert Hopkins on October 2, 1938 and he preceded her in death on November 5, 2001. Mrs. Hopkins was a homemaker and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Jones and her husband Wayne of Louisville; three sons, Robert Hopkins, Jr. and his wife Hannah of North Palm Beach, Florida, Larry Hopkins and Patricia of Indianapolis, and Johnny Hopkins and Bonita of Indianapolis; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister Mrs. Agnes Huntington and her husband Robert of Holton. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Phyllis Ann Hopkins, her grandson Michael Jones, and her brothers Eugene, Delano, and Ollie Hall. Luella Hicks, 88, of Napoleon passed away Tuesday February 17,2004 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. She was born near Holton on January 1, 1916 the daughter of Gilbert and Goldah Salyers Winters. She was married to Vern Hicks on July 19, 1934  and he preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Hicks was a member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon. She was a former custodian in the Jac-Cen-Del and Napoleon school systems and had worked at Knueven’s and Griner’s Grocery stores in Napoleon. Survivors include one son, Donald Hicks and his wife Pat of Napoleon; two grandsons, Brad Hicks and Bart Hicks both of Napoleon along with seven great-grandchildren. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Otis and Clifford Winters. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, February 20th at 10am at the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon with Fr. Larry Borders of St. Maurice and Pastor Gary Groth of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Napoleon officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Napoleon. Emma Pickett, 97, of Osgood, formerly of the Dabney community, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Dabney on June 14, 1906, the daughter of Montezuma and Ella Vanosdol Ensminger. She was married to Luther Pickett on December 6, 1926 and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1942. Mrs Pickett was a 1924 graduate of Holton High School and was their oldest living graduate. She was a homemaker and had formerly worked at Lemen’s Grocery Store in Holton. Survivors include two sons, Everett Pickett and his wife Gail of Louisville, Dale Pickett and Jeannie of Milford, New Hampshire; one daughter Gay White and her husband Ed of Versailles; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her son Hillis Pickett, brothers Phillip, David, and Van Ensminger and her sisters Betty Bruce, Jenny Cole, and Zelda Stevens. Visitation will be Friday, February 20th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 21st at 10:30am with Rev. Shannon Oney Begley, 29, of New Marion passed away Saturday, February 14, 2004 at the University Hospital in Louisville. She was born on June 10, 1974, the daughter of Emmett and Patricia Adams Oney. She was married to John D. Begley on June 12, 1992 and he survives. Other survivors include four children, Andrew, Emliee, Isaiah, and Luke, all at home; her parents Emmett and Patricia Oney of Versailles; two brothers, Scott Oney and John Oney both of Versailles; one sister Christina Hyatt of Versailles; her maternal grandfather Ed Adams of Versailles. Mrs. Begley was a1993 graduate of South Ripley High School and was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the New Marion Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Mary C. Haynes, 51, of Batesville, formerly of Friendship, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born in Cincinnati on August 3, 1952 and was married to George Haynes on September 5, 1999 and he survives.  Mrs. Haynes was an employee of the New Horizons in Batesville. She is also survived by her son Russell Haynes and her daughter Tina Perry; one granddaughter Brittany Stroud all of Batesville; two brothers, Chuck Sturgill  and Wade Lewis both of Cincinnati; three sisters, Barbara Smallwood of Canaan, Nuggett Sturgill of Cincinnati, and Regina Sturgill of Florida. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 14th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with burial in the Akers Friendship Cemetery. David E. Hankins, 87, of Cross Plains, passed away Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Jefferson County, Indiana on February 5, 1917 the son of William Frederick and Myrtle Dalgleish Hankins.He was married to Freda Thomas on January 9, 1937 and she preceded him in death in January 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Steele and her husband Bob of Versailles and Janice McClure and her husband Donald of Madison; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; one brother, Willaim Lloyd Hankins of Madison; three sisters, Esther Marie Hoffman of Canaan, Freda Mae Hansmann of Versailles, and Maxine Roberts of Kent.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Mitchell Hankins and Loren Hankins; three sisters, Marjorie Mathews, Lela Elston, and Laura Etta Sleek.  Mr. Hankins was an Army veteran of WWII and served with the Core of Engineers in Belgium and France. He was a member of the Cross Plains Church of Christ and the Brown Township American Legion and was a retired farmer. Funeral Services will be Friday, February 13th 2004 at 11am at the Cross Plains Church of Christ with Brother Logan Fugate officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, February 12th  from 4pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery at Cross Plains. Jack P. Hipskind, 82, of the Locksprings community near Osgood, passed away Friday, February 6, 2004 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born at Wabash, Indiana on March 9, 1921 the son of Ernest and Emma Lochmann Hipskind. He was married to Iva Fern Bultman on May 18, 1991 and she survives. Other survivors include one son, Terry Hipskind and his wife Linda of Tuscon; daughters Yolanda Kuta and her husband  Alan of Warsaw, Indiana, and Deborah Carpenter and husband Randy of Seymour; step-sons Lynn Bultman and Mary of St.Charles, MO, Lyle Bultman and Akiko of Shanghai, China; one step-daughter Irish Stockard and Jim of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Gladys Holycross of Urbana, Indiana; ten grandchildren, nine great-grand, and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wives Laura Beamer Hipskind and Jean Haupert Hipskind, grandson Aaron P. Hatfield, brothers Hilton and Arnold Hipskind and his sister Loretta Adams. Mr. Hipskind was an Army veteran of WWII where he served as a paratrooper. He was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and was also an avid square dancer. He was a retired commercial electrician for Kuntz-Wagner in South Bend retiring in 1983. Funeral services will be Monday, February 9th at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, February 8th from 3pm to 6pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services at the church.  Graveside services will be held at 12pm Tuesday, February 10th at the Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw, Indiana. Betty Sue Baugh, 65, of Holton passed away Friday, January 16, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Versailles on November 12, 1938 the daughter of George and Eva McClure Curran. She was married to Edgar Baugh on October 28, 1957 and he survives. Other survivors include two sons, Mike Baugh of Scipio, Joey Baugh and his wife Shella of Seymour;  one grandson, Brycen Baugh and one granddaughter Alysa Baugh; two brothers, Robert Curran and James Curran both of Versailles, one sister Shirley Thompson of Hamilton, Ohio. Mrs. Baugh was a 1956 graduate of Versailles High School and a member of the Versailles American Legion Auxillary. She was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles where she enjoyed working with children and teaching Sunday School. Mrs. Baugh had attended Sunday School at the Tyson United Methodist church every Sunday for 62 consecutive years. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 19th at 11am at the Tyson United Methodist Church with Rev.Michael Hendrix officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, January 18th from 3pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Mary E. Powell, 94, of Versailles passed away Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Louisville on March 4, 1909 the daughter of Johnny and Anna Mae Cullivan Dent. She was married to Preston Powell and he preceded her in death in 1972. Mrs. Powell was a seamstress and had retired from the Methodist Hospital in Louisville after 25 years as the head cashier. She is survived by one son, Ralph Pevlor of Smyrna, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grand and six great great grandchildren; one brother, William Daily and one sister, Ann Manning both of Louisville. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her sons James Pevlor, Murray Pevlor, and David Pevlor and her grandson Ronald Lee Hamilton, Jr. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 13th at 1pm at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. Visitation will be Monday, January 12th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to St.Judes Childrens Research or to Rescue 69.

 

Elizabeth (Betty) Jean Walsh, 85, of Holton passed away Friday, January 2, 2004 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born at Junction City, Kansas on April 6, 1918 the daughter of Lloyd and Hazel Rathbone Wallace. She was married to Norman Walsh on August 12, 1936 and he preceded her in death on December 22, 1990. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister.  Mr. Walsh, a native of Ripley County, and Mrs. Walsh spent most of their married life in Livingston, Montana. Survivors include her brother-in-law John Leslie Walsh and his wife Ruth, and sister-in-law Selma Walsh all of Holton along with several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 10th at 3pm at the Holton Cemetery. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Leroy “Lee” W. Kemker, 80, of Milan passed away Friday, January 2, 2004 at the Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born near Milan on July 18, 1923 the son of Charles and Theresa Beach Kemker. He was married to Elaine Everage on August 28, 1946 and she survives. Other survivors include one son, William Kemker, two daughters, Linda Scoggins and Diane Gordon, all of Milan; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren;  five sisters, Jane Adams of Osgood, Daisy Linzy of Texas Norma Sutton of Batesville, Kathryn Holt of Versailles, and Patricia Morris of Moores Hill. Mr. Kemker was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and two grandchildren. He was a former employee of the Milan Furniture Factory and had retired from Romwebers in Batesville. Mr. Kemker was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Monday, January 5th at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Walker and Rev.Richard Burcham officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30am until time of services at the church.  Memorials may be given to the donors choice.
