Ronnie D. May, 60, of Versailles passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born at Batesville on May 18, 1954 the son of Stanley and Catherine Farrell May. He was married to Theresa Jewell on June 21, 1975 and she survives. Other survivors include his mother Catherine May of Versailles; one son Jared D. May of Osgood; one daughter Crystal (Charles) Raison also of Osgood; one sister Linda (Barry) Borter of Holton; four brothers Gerald (Elena) May of Parrish, Florida, Eddie May of Jamestown, and Richard (Betty) May and David (Melissa) May both of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. May was a 1973 graduate of South Ripley High School. He retired after 37 years with Delta Faucet and was currently working as a plant operator for Best Metal Finishing in Osgood. Ronnie was a member of the Cedar Creek Community Church and the Heartland Classic Cruisers Car Club. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Cemetery or the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Harold H. Huff, 83, of Osgood passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at his home. He was born near Napoleon on October 18, 1931 the son of Henry and Catherine Pollwine Huff. He was married to Rosella “Susie” Effing on July 10, 1957 and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter Sharon (David) Helms of Westport; three sons Bill (Karen) Huff of Napoleon, Tom (Trina) Huff of Osgood, and Kenny Huff of Hartsville; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his twin brother Andy Huff of Osgood, and his brother Bernard (Darlene) Huff of Westport. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Virgil Huff. Mr. Huff was a 1950 graduate of Napoleon High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he rose to the rank of Corporal with the 43rd Infantry Regiment. He received the Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Huff was a farmer and retired in 1992 after 36 years with Bohn Aluminum in Greensburg. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Harold was a member of the St. John Catholic Church in Osgood, the Knights of Columbus, Knights of St. John, and the VFW. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 27th at 10am at St. John Catholic Church in Osgood with Father Bill Turner officiating. Burial will be in the St. Maurice Cemetery in Napoleon with military graveside rites by the Osgood American Legion. Visitation will be Friday from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rosary services at 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Hospice of South Central Indiana or St. John Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Dennis “Pete” Holcomb, 80, of Versailles passed away at 6am Monday, December 15, 2014 at his home. He was born near Zenas in Jennings County on October 30, 1934 the son of Walter and Gladys Sporleder Holcomb. He was married to Alta Adams on November 5, 1954 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Dennis Jr. “Pete” (Marcia) Holcomb of Versailles; one daughter Denise (Wendell) Tewmey of Lebanon, Ohio; four grandsons Chet (Katie) Tewmey of Lebanon, Ohio, Cody Tewmey and companion Laura Haynsworth of Hermosa Beach, California, Derick Holcomb and companion Misty Slayback of Lawrenceburg, and Dane (Kayla) Holcomb of Georgetown, Kentucky; 7 great-grandchildren; one brother Dean (Lila) Holcomb of Westport. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Holcomb was a 1953 graduate of Holton High School. He was a former employee of the Indiana State Highway, Farm Bureau Co-op in Holton, and Hyatt’s Sawmill in Holton. He had also worked in construction through Laborer’s Union 741 and had driven a bus for the Holton School. Pete was a former member of the US Trotting Association and had owned and trained standard bred horses. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, gardening, and following IU basketball. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 19th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Michael Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Marble Corner Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Marble Corner Cemetery or the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Christina Day Sutton, 45, of Osgood passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born in Lawrenceburg on January 27, 1969 the daughter of Tom and Lorine Holliday Day. She was married to Timothy Sutton on November 1, 1997 and he survives. Other survivors include her parents Tom and Lorine Day of Versailles; step-son Blake Sutton of Greensburg; step-daughter Lindsay Sutton, a freshman at Ball State University in Muncie; her sister Deanna (Roger) Young of Napoleon; father-in-law George Sutton of Fairfield, Ohio; mother-in-law Priscilla Sutton, and grandmother-in-law Betty McGlone both of Osgood; and her nieces Kiersten Young, a doctorate student at Bellarmine University in Louisville, and Morgan Young, a junior at Ball State University. Mrs. Sutton was a 1987 graduate of South Ripley High School. She was employed with the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville where she worked in medical billing. She had also been employed with Magic Touch Flowers in Osgood and had previously done medical billing for Obermeyer Chiropractic. She was an avid supporter of Jac-Cen-Del sports and also offered her assistance in many school functions. Chris was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and her hobbies included playing softball and scrapbooking. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 18th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Bill Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Bucket Buddies Mission or the Jac-Cen-Del Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.

 

Jamie Stratton, 61, of Lafayette passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette. She was born at Batesville on October 5, 1953 the daughter of James and Jeraldine Jahnigen Humphrey. She was married to Sam Stratton on May 31, 1975 and he survives. Other survivors include her mother Jeraldine Humphrey of Osgood; one son James D. Stratton of Anderson; one daughter Christina Stratton of Lafayette; one sister Janine (Mike) Stratton of Holton; sisters-in-law Barbara (Chuck) Stevenson of Indianapolis, and Vernice Stratton of Holton. She was preceded in death by her father. Mrs. Stratton was a 1971 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School where she was her class valedictorian. She received her BS degree in nursing from the University of Evansville in 1975 and her MS degree in pediatric nursing from the University of Missouri in 1981. For the past several years she had worked as an assistant nurse at East Tipp Middle School and Hershey Elementary School near Lafayette. She had also been a nurse at Home Hospital in Lafayette, served as Washington Township Trustee, and had been a nursing instructor at Purdue University. Jamie was a member of the Buck Creek United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher as well as serving on various committees. She had baked professionally making cakes for weddings and special occasions. Jamie also enjoyed crafts, flowers, scrapbooking, and decorating for the holidays. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 17th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Tom Beatley of the Osgood United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Dabney Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Dabney Cemetery or the Osgood United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Roberta (Bobbie Jo) Bryant, 67, of Versailles passed away at 4:15am Monday, December 8, 2014 at her home. She was born at Brookville on February 5, 1947 the daughter of Vearl and Francis Pfaff Hertel. She was married to Andy Bryant on April 10, 1982 and he survives. Other survivors include four daughters Andrea Carnahan (Kenneth) Smith of Friendship, Angie Carnahan (Tony) Rieger of Portland, Oregon, Carla Carnahan (Joshua) Davis of Dayton, Ohio, and Candy (Mark) Guenther of Liberty; six grandchildren Katie, Sophia, and Robert Guenther, Madelyn Smith, and Natalie and Ryan Rieger; one sister Michelle “Mickie” Page of Rossville. She was preceded in death by her parents. Bobbie Jo was a 1965 graduate of Brookville High School and worked for 35 years for the administrative wing of River Valley Resources, retiring earlier this year. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and her hobbies included gardening and reading on the front porch. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 10th from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Akers Friendship Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be given to the Kings Daughters Hospice or the Akers Friendship Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

James D. Bowling, 56, died the night of December 3rd, 2014 of a massive heart attack while coon-hunting with his friend and beloved hounds near his residence in Moorefield, IN.  He was born November 1, 1958 in Milan, IN.  James is survived by his wife of 32 years, Vonda K. Bowling, his son and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Jordan Bowling, and daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Jason Dameron all of Milan; his 4 grandchildren; Blaine, Wyatt, Jaden, and Olivia; his brothers and sister; Betty Jo(Gene) Copeland of Breckenridge, Colorado, Rick(Diana) Bowling of Morrow, Ohio, Mike(Barbara) Bowling of French Lick, and Sulvan(Thuy) Bowling Jr of Farmers Retreat.; and his brother and sister-in-laws; Will Disbro, Greg Disbro, David Disbro, and Tonya Fletcher.  James is preceded in death by his parents; Sulvan and Nancy P. Bowling; his nephew Michael Bowling Jr.; and his father and mother-in-law; Bill and Sallie Disbro. James was a 1977 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was an 18 year veteran of the US Air Force and rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant. He received the Air Force Service Award Ribbon, NCO Professional Education Graduate Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, and was certified as an expert marksman and he also was distinguished as one of the top 10 recruiters by the Air Force. He was currently the maintenance supervisor and events coordinator for Hanover College and had formerly worked in maintenance at Argosy Casino. He is also the announcer for the American Wrestling Association. James was a member of the Milan American Legion, Milan VFW, American Coon hunters Association, and the Long Run Baptist Church at Vevay.   James lived to entertain his friends and family. He sang and played his guitar to bring joy to all of those around him, he provoked his friends with the occasional prank, he was an incredible performer, singer, writer, and commentator; but most of all, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 10th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Casey Banta officiating. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery at Elrod. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Stephen M. Mathews, 58, of Cross Plains passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at his home. He was born in Cincinnati on December 2, 1956 the son of Donald ad Jacqueline Henry Mathews. He was married to Rebecca Slayback on October 5, 2006 and she survives. Other survivors include his father Donald Mathews of Medina, Ohio; two daughters Katie Mathews of Amelia, Ohio and Lesa Mathews of Westchester, Ohio; two step-sons Johnny (Brittany) Wurtzler and Joey Wurtzler both of Harrison, Ohio; 6 grandchildren; three brothers Kenneth (Cheryl) Mathews of Cross Plains; Douglas (Carol) Mathews of Medina, Ohio, and Timothy Mathews of Columbus, Ohio; one sister Sandra (Danny) Clatterbuck of Madison, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother, and his brother David Mathews. Mr. Mathews was a former driver for M & M Trucking in Madison and was a member of the NMLRA. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on Friday, December 12th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Indiana Veteran Cemetery at Madison. Visitation will be Friday from 11am until time of services.

 

Lester C. Holman, 77, of New Marion passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born near New Marion on July 29, 1937 the son of Truman and Amelia Geisler Holman. He was married to Rene Kendall on July 24, 1970 and she preceded him in death on January 11, 2006. He then married Mary Ann Tenney Parshall and she survives. Other survivors include one son David (Kim) Holman of Madison; 4 grandchildren and  6 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers Harry (Bernadette) Holman and Roy (Vickie) Holman both of Versailles; three sisters Dina Herbert and Brenda Holman both of Milhousen, and Myrtie (Frank) Franklin of Holton. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leslie, and his sister Darlene Holman. Mr. Holman was a 1957 graduate of New Marion High School and served a short stint in the US Army. He was a 30 year employee of Contel where worked as a lineman supervisor and was also employed with Holman Septic Sales in New Marion. Lester was a member of the West Fork Baptist Church and the Kentuckiana- Clarksville Harley Owners Group. In his spare time, Lester enjoyed woodworking and was an accomplished artist. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5th at 11am at the West Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Karen Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the West Fork Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Mildred Aikins, 88, of Osgood passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born at Rising Sun on May 1, 1926 the daughter of Clinton and Wilma Bailey Peaslee. She was married to Ray Aikins and he preceded her in death on May 14, 1998. Survivors include two daughters Sherry (Dave) Weimer of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Nicci (Paul) George of Indianapolis; four grandchildren Kelly (Jim) Touchtone of Pawpaw, Michigan, Shannon Weimer and her fiancé Tim Bailey of Kalamazoo, Emily (Carl) Salzman of Bloomington, and Natalie (Gabriel) Grace of Indianapolis; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister Lois Colebrook of Cincinnati; one brother Vern (Debbie) Peaslee of Tampa, Florida;  sisters-in-law Melba (Everett) Thompson, Ann Peaslee, and Wilma Peaslee all of Versailles. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Virgil Peaslee and Clayton Peaslee. Mrs. Aikins was a 1943 graduate of Versailles High School. She was employed for 25 years as a secretary for the Osgood Elementary School, retiring in 1989. Mildred was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church and a former member of Tri-Kappa and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading and tending her flowers in her past time. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Thomas Beatley of the Osgood United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10am until time of services. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.

 

Mary L. Gabbard, 88, of Osgood passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Shady Nook Health Care Center in Lawrenceburg. She was born at Greendale on January 19, 1926 the daughter of Holman and Edna Wilson Steinmetz. Survivors include one son Michael (Stephanie) Gabbard of San Diego, California; three daughters Vickie (Kenneth)  Kasserman of Versailles, Suzanne (Paul) Cox of Orlando, Florida, and Debbie Simon of Lawrenceburg; 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Virginia Miller. Mrs. Gabbard was a 1944 graduate of Lawrenceburg High School. Mary worked for 30 years as a medical aide at the Muscatatuck State Developmental Center at Butlerville, retiring in 1985.  Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.

 

Ernest Lee Fuehrer, 74, of Danville passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 at the Danville Regional Rehab Center. He was born near Cross Plains on May 9, 1940 the son of Paul and Nora Hankins Fuehrer. Survivors include two brothers Reece (Carolyn) Fuehrer of Danville and Danny (Helen) Fuehrer of Richmond, Kentucky; two sisters Pauline Macal of Anoka, Minnesota and Linda (Yogi) Henderson of Rockville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Earl, Clifton, and Max Fuehrer, and his sisters Viola Fuehrer and Evelyn Griffith. Lee had been a resident of the rehab center since 1999 and enjoyed participating in the facility’s activities including bingo and attending church services. He also enjoyed watching basketball and Colts football. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 25th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12pm until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Benham Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Donald Eugene Herman Hunger age 81, of Versailles, Indiana entered this life on March 1, 1933, in Benham, Indiana, the eldest son of Willard Herman Louis & Roberta Elmo (Steele) Hunger. He was raised in Ripley County, Indiana & was a 1951 graduate of Cross Plains High School. Donald was baptized, confirmed, and a member of Luther League at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Olean. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Olean, Indiana and Smyrna, Indiana) throughout his life. Donald married Edna Pauline “Polly” (Pollard) Hunger on February 9, 1952 at Milan Baptist Church, Milan, Indiana. During their 62 years of marriage they raised and nurtured a family of five children, sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Donald enjoyed passing his time by debating politics and discussing his faith with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking family road trips to the Smokey Mountains, Tennessee, Emerald Isle, South Carolina, and Summerset, Kentucky and nap time. He also served the family as the original GPS by providing directions over the phone on many occasions. Donald started his trucking career at age 16 driving for his father driving a milk route. After high school he drove for B&H Trucking.  In 1956, he became the owner/operator of Donald Hunger Trucking and later incorporated his company which became known as Hunger Trucking, Incorporated. Throughout the years Donald was a subcontracted driver for B&H Trucking, Lawrenceburg Trucking, RiverBend Transport, Laughery Valley Ag and Reis Trucking before he retired his truck and trailers in 2010. He was a life time member of the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA).  Over the years Donald drove many models of Mack trucks. People knew Donald up and down the highway by his CB name, “Corncob”. He met many people during his travels and established lifelong friendships. Donald was known as a truck driver but will be remembered for his love of his family and his faith. Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife Polly; his children Sue & Lee Buchanan of Benham, Shirley & Tracy Lemon of Versailles, Ron & Michelle Hunger of Versailles, and Jim & Jennifer Hunger of Scottsburg; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his siblings Ruth Hunger, Ernest Lee & Kay Hunger, Anita Mae & Dave Giltner, Larry & Esther Hunger, Eileen & Frank LaGreca, Karen & Ramon Sauley, and Rebecca Hunger; and many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Willard & Roberta Hunger, his daughter Angela Marie Hunger Hoskins, his brothers Willard Keith Hunger and Paul Arnold Hunger and his great-grand child Little McKinley Carver Pennington. The visitation will be Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 from 3pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles; the funeral will follow on Monday, 11:00am at the St Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Curtis Black officiating. Memorials may be made to the Angela Hoskins Scholarship Fund, Matt’s Mission or the church. 

 

Marietta Hackman, 93, of Osgood passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at Morning Breeze in Greensburg. She was born in Indianapolis on March 29, 1921 the daughter of Paul and Laura Allen Franklin. She was married to Walter “Babe” Hackman on May 3, 1943 and he preceded her in death on January 12, 1999. Survivors include two sons Jerry Hackman and Rick (Mary) Hackman both of Osgood; two daughters Sharon White of Granville, Ohio, and Christie (Dennis) White of Osgood; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Joan Hammon of Orlando, Florida. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Chelsa Hackman, her son-in-law Larry White, and her brothers Chuck Franklin, James Franklin, Paul Franklin, and Floyd Franklin. Mrs. Hackman was a 1939 graduate of Osgood High School. She was a homemaker and along with her husband owned and operated Hackman’s Coin-O-Wash Laundromat in Osgood. Marietta was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, and the Osgood American Legion Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Greendale Cemetery in Osgood. Memorials may be given to the Osgood United Methodist Church or the Greendale Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

 

Robert A. Simmons, 71, of New Marion passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the University Hospital in Louisville. He was born in Madison on January 7, 1943 the son of Robert D. and Lorraine Duval Simmons. He was married to Elaine Grow on October 22, 1982 and she survives. Other survivors include one son James R. Simmons of New Marion; two daughters Susan (Steve) Whitham of Canaan, and Sandra (Grant) Brown on Olean; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers James (Mary) Simmons of Lamb, and Thomas Simmons of Madison; one sister Sharon Bliton of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Kenneth Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a 1961 graduate of Madison High School. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War where served with the 20thNaval Construction Regiment. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He worked in supervision for US Shoe for 39 years in plants in Madison, Vevay, and Osgood, and also had farmed with his father operating a dairy farm as well as raising tobacco. Mr. Simmons was a member of the Brooksburg Baptist Church, the Vevay VFW, and the American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Dennis Werner of the Solid Rock Bible Fellowship Church in Napoleon officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Napoleon with military graveside rites by the Osgood American Legion. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm. Elsie Connelly, 100, of Holton passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus. She was born in the Marble Corner Community southwest of New Marion in what is now the Jefferson Proving Ground on March 1, 1914 the daughter of Benjamin F. and Glenora Adam Dilk. She was married to Russell Connelly on November 30, 1933 and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1970. Survivors include her sister-in-law Ruby Dilk of Columbus; nephews Gary Dilk of Coventry, Connecticut and Jerry Dilk of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces Karen Bowles of Ft. Myers, Florida, Sharron Staab of Oxford, Ohio, and Patty Baston of Hamilton, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her son Gerald Connelly, and her brothers Dale Dilk and Raymond Dilk. Mrs. Connelly was a former employee of Lemen’s Store in Holton as well as the Holton Sundries. Elsie was a 65 year member of the Holton United Methodist Church where she served as the pianist and was church treasurer for over 32 years. She was also a member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary and the Indiana Retired Teachers. Graveside services will be held on Monday, October 27th at 11:00am at the Marble Corner Cemetery in Versailles with Rev. Dennis Hadler of the Holton United Methodist Church officiating. John A. Halford, 73, of Olean passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at his home. He was born in Tetbury Gloustershire, England on April 22, 1941 the son of Andrew McIver Halford and Helen Saunders Halford. He was married to Patricia Curran in Glendale, California on June 11, 1966 and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters Rebecca (Rick) Brown, and Judy (Chris) Hoban both of Columbus, Ohio; 6 grandchildren; his father-in-law Freeman Curran of Olean; three sisters Margaret Halford of Berthoud, Colorado, Geraldine (Chris) Bayley of Wales, and Gaye (Ross) Beath of Australia; one brother Phillip (Linda) Halford of Hertfordshire, England. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert Halford. Mr. Halford received his BA degree in theology from Ambassador University in Pasadena, California in 1966. From 1966 to 2014 he was a minister for Grace Communion International, pastoring churches in Australia and Asia. He also served as their Regional Director in Europe and was editor of the Christian Odyssey Magazine. John was a member of the Christ International Church in Cincinnati, the Versailles Lions Club, and the South Ripley Ministerial Association. In his past time, he enjoyed building model trains. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 25th at 11am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Rick Shallenberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Saturday at the church. The Versailles Lions Club will conduct memorial services Friday at 8pm at the funeral home. Henry H. Groves, 74, of Dabney passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg. He was born at Covington, Kentucky on December 25, 1939 the son of Gilford and Marguerite Green Groves. He was married to Judy Collins on July 22, 1961 and she preceded him in death on April 7, 2012. Survivors include two sons Eric Groves of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and Jeff (Laura) Groves of Dillsboro; four grandchildren Sierra (Andy) Dole of Versailles, Dylan Groves of West Lafayette, and Zachary and Sean Groves of Dillsboro; one great-granddaughter Madelyn Grace Dole; also his cousin Helen Boone of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mr. Groves was a 1958 graduate of Highland High School in Highlands Heights, Kentucky. He was employed with BCA in Greensburg from 1966 to 2003 where he worked as a screw machine operator. Henry also served as vice-president of the United Steelworkers Local. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22nd at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Paul Wenning officiating. Terry Woolum, 79, of Versailles passed away Saturday, October 18, 2014 at his home. He was born near Alexandria in Campbell County, Kentucky on July 10, 1935 the son of Letcher and Lena Amstutz Woolum. He was married to Norma Hoeferkamp on October 24, 1959 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Steve (Mary Ellen) Woolum and Michael (Michele) Woolum both of Versailles; three grandchildren Andrea (Josh) Cumberworth, Olivia (Thomas) Welch, and Logan Woolum all of Versailles; one brother Everett (Laura) Woolum of Galveston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jeffery, and his sister Nancy Barker. Mr. Woolum was a 1953 graduate of Campbell County (Kentucky) High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1957. He had worked as the southeastern Indiana appraiser for the Farm Credit Association of Louisville, was also a farmer, and founder of Woolum Realty in Versailles. Terry was a member of the Madison Assembly of God Church and was a former member of the South Ripley School Board. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 21st at 11am at the Madison Assembly of God with Pastor Peter Joudry officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be on Monday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and on Tuesday from 10am until time of services at the church. Velta I. Benham, 93, of Versailles passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born in Russellville, Ohio on May 15, 1921 the daughter of Carey and Esther Kautz Geeslin. She was married to Carl Benham on February 14, 1947 and he preceded her in death January 16, 1974. Survivors include one son Jerry (Sharon) Benham of Aurora; one daughter Partha (Arthur) Swingle of Versailles; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Carlene Smith, brother Vernon Geeslin, and her sister June Gaskin. Mrs. Benham was a former employee of Thomas’ Fashions, IGA, Jahnigen Cleaners, and  Mildred Pratt’s dress shop, all in Versailles. Velta was a member of the Versailles Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with Charles Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Asbury “Ace” Sandlin, Jr., 71, of Louisville, Tennessee passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at his home. He is survived by his wife Teresa Brewer Sandlin; daughters Leslie, Lisa, Rachel, and Amanda; grandchildren Daniel, Sophia, and Isaac; great-grandson Trey; brothers Eugene Sandlin and Paul Sandlin; also his father and mother-in-law HC and Ruby Brewer of Holton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Betty and Barbara, and his brother Carl. Mr. Sandlin was a member of the Hillview Baptist Church, founder of the Father’s Touch, and was a realtor for 50 years. Funeral services will be held on Monday at the Smith Funeral Home in Marysville, Tennessee. Graveside services will be held at 10am Wednesday, October 1st at 10am at the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with Pastor Dale Boyd of the Butlerville Mennonite Church officiating. Faith M. Hensley, 87, of North Vernon, formerly of New Marion passed away Monday, September 15, 2014 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on January 23, 1927 the daughter of O. P. and Roxanna Wilson Kearns. She was married to Earl Hensley and he preceded her in death on May 31, 1998. Survivors include two sons Kent Hensley of Indianapolis and Kevin (Sandra) Hensley of Versailles; two daughters Karen Long and Kathy Hensley both of North Vernon; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters Francina Bailey and Janet Proctor. Mrs. Hensley graduated college in Pennsylvania and had worked as a telephone operator in Cape Canaveral, Florida and also in Greensburg. She retired in 1985 after 37 years working as an attendant at the Muscatatuck State Developmental Center at Butlerville. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 19th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery. Alta R. Diem, 99, of Cross Plains passed away Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born near New Marion on August 19, 1915 the daughter of Emmett and Grace Caster Robinson. She was married to Henry Diem on December 23, 1933 and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1998. Survivors include two sons David (Vicki) Diem of Versailles and Tony (Shirley) Diem of Cross Plains; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Ina Sininger of Hamilton, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant son John, her brother Arza Robinson and her sister Edith Benham. Mrs. Diem was a homemaker and along with her husband owned and operated a dairy farm where they milked jersey cows. Alta was an 80 year member of the St .Paul Lutheran Church at Olean where she participated in the Martha Circle. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 15th at 11am at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Curtis Black officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Sunday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Monday at the church. Leslie N. Stratton, Jr., 59, of Holton passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis after a five month battle with leukemia. He was born at the Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville on December 2, 1954 the son of Leslie and Ruby Bultman Stratton. He was married to Vernice Owens on March 9, 1974 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Roger (Rhonda) Stratton of Holton; one daughter Jennifer (Hank) Nicholson of Versailles; daughter-in-law Katherine Hiatt of Holton; father and mother-in-law Joe and Susan Owens of Osgood; grandchildren Levi Stratton, Emmett Stratton, Lanie Nicholson, Lucie Nicholson, Clint Nicholson, and Emma Hiatt; one sister Barbara (Chuck) Stevenson of Indianapolis; two brothers Sam (Jamie) Stratton of Lafayette and Mike (Janine) Stratton of Holton. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Carol Stratton, and his son Leslie Scott Stratton. Mr. Stratton attended elementary and junior high school at Holton and was a 1973 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School. He served in the US Army from 1973 to 1976 where he was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and also at Ft. Carson, Colorado and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He joined the Indiana State Excise Police on January 8, 1979 after having graduated from Vincennes University. He then graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy on October 5, 1979 and was assigned to the Vincennes District before transferring to the Seymour area where he served the remainder of his career. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 1, 1987 and received the department’s Educator of the Year award in 1997. He also owned and operated Jr.’s Maintenance Services for the last several years. Les was a 50 year member of the Dabney Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 13th at 10:30am at the Dabney Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Bell and Rev. Bob Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Dabney Cemetery. Rev. Garland L. Rudd, 88, of North Vernon passed away Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born near Lee City in Clay County, Kentucky on June 12, 1926 the son of Dorsey and Goldie Miller Rudd. He was married to Loredith “Bea” Nickell on April 17, 1948 and she preceded him in death on November 16, 2008. Survivors include one son Ronald (Ginny) Rudd of Westport; one daughter Sheila (Dennis) Schuler of North Vernon; 8 grandchildren Jeff and Kevin Luedtke, Jennifer Jones, Melissa Patterson, Angie Moore, and Gary, Lacey, and Ryan Rudd; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Ottis (Glinda) Rudd of Lexington, Kentucky. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Gail Luedtke, great-grandson Benjamin Wren, his sister Christine Marie Tolson, and his brothers Mervin Dean Rudd, Carl B. Rudd, Melvin C. Rudd, and Odus G. Rudd. Pastor Rudd, as he was affectionately known, founded and pastored the Cedar Creek Community church near Osgood for 51 years, beginning in 1963 in what was an abandoned Methodist Church. He was also a retired tool and die maker for Reliance Electric for 38 years and had been named a Kentucky Colonel. But above all and until his last day, he was first and foremost a Minister of the Gospel. A minute into a conversation, stranger or friend, the pastor would want to know if you were attending church. Funeral services for Rev. Rudd will be held at his beloved Cedar Creek Community Church on Friday, September 12th at 10:30am with his nephew Rev. Wayne Tolson and his grandson Rev. Jeff Luedtke officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery. Doug Denny, 58, of Cross Plains passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014 at his home. He was born in Milan on December 10, 1955 the son of Charles and Phyllis Schwartz Denny. Survivors include his father and step-mother Charles and Joyce Denny of Cross Plains; two daughters Salina (Joshua) Smith of Chicago and Brittany (Phillip) Woodruff of Jeffersonville; one son Cody (Tasha) Denny of Jeffersonville; 5 grandchildren; one brother Greg (Jackie) Denny of Cross Plains; his twin sister Donna (Ralph) Stenger of Cross Plains and his sister Beth Laswell of Dupont.  He was preceded in death by his mother and his son Kyran Douglas Denny. Mr. Denny was a 1974 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was employed as a diesel mechanic with Denny Transport in Jeffersonville. A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, September 13 from 11am to 3pm at the Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 4900 W Luther Road in Floyds Knobs, Indiana with the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles in charge of arrangements.

 

Clofus Jones, 86, of Versailles passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at his home. He was born near Barboursville in Knox County, Kentucky on September 29, 1927 the son of John and Phema Grills Jones. He was married to Marjorie Whitham and she preceded him in death on August 7, 1992. Survivors include his daughter-in-law Barbara Jones and his grandson Kenneth Jones both of Sunman; one brother Grover (Joan) Jones of Canaan; four sisters Ethel Mills of Versailles, Flora Cooper of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Hazel Randolph and Bessie Clipp both of Jeffersonville. He was also preceded in death by his parents, sons David Jones and Clofus Wayne Jones, brothers Otis, Arnold, Shelby, Ernest, Garnet, and Clifton Jones, and his sisters Effie Day and Thelma Jones. Mr. Jones farmed his entire life and was a former employee of Seagrams in Lawrenceburg as well as the Madison State Hospital. He was an Army veteran, serving as a Corporal from 1946 to 1948 with the 1537th AAF, and he received the WWII Victory Medal. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 1st at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery near Cross Plains. Visitation will be Sunday from 3pm to 6pm. Memorials may be given to the Salem Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Virginia M. Shook, 86, of Osgood passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at her home. She was born in the Rush Branch community of Jennings County in what is now the Jefferson Proving Ground on September 30, 1927 the daughter of William and Alvina Jantzen Schonfeld. She was married to Roscoe Shook on November 12, 1948 and he preceded her in death on June 29, 1998. Survivors include three daughters Wanda Shook of Osgood, Libby (Jeff) Updike of Greentown, and Donna (Steve) Shade of Trinity, North Carolina; four grandchildren Tera Beverly of Kokomo, Kimberly Updike of Greentown, and Adam Shade and William Shade both of Trinity; one great-grandson Landon Sweat.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her grandson Barry Beverly, her brother Harry Schonfeld, and her sister Viola Schonfeld. Mrs. Shook was a 1946 graduate of Osgood High School and was a clerical worker for the Jefferson Proving Ground. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2nd at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery. David Begley, 87, of Versailles passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 at his home. He was born on Bull Creek near Dry Hill in Leslie County, Kentucky on May 28, 1927 the son of Joe and Maxie Melton Begley. He was married to Clara Noble in 1945 and she preceded him in death on October 29, 1996. Survivors include one son Charlie Begley of Lawrenceburg; 7 grandchildren James Begley, Chris Begley, John Begley, Charles David Begley, Jaclyn Begley, Jack Begley, and Samantha Begley, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his son Jack Begley, his brother J. L. Begley, sisters Alveda Sizemore, Jeneda Shircliff, and Hattie Jean Lewis, and his great-grandson Matthew Willman. Mr. Begley was an Army veteran of WWII where he served with the 5th Army in Japan. He received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army Occupation of Japan Medal. He was a truck driver employed with Gateway Trucking in Cincinnati, retiring in 1979. David was a member of the VFW, the Teamsters, and a former American Legion member. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 29th  at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Friday from 11am until time of services. Rhonda J. Tunny, 57, of Seymour, formerly of Holton passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. She was born at Milan on August 18, 1957 the daughter of Travis and Janet Walsh Mack. She was married to Paul Tunny on January 17, 1976 and he survives. Other survivors include her parents Travis and Janet Mack of Holton; one son Brad Tunny of Salisbury, North Carolina; one daughter Kristi Schneider of Seymour; three grandchildren Braxton Tunny, Blake Schneider, and Brooklyn Schneider; one brother Kevin Mack of Holton. Mrs. Tunny was a 1975 graduate of South Ripley High School. She formerly served as the clerk-treasurer for the town of Holton and had also worked as a cook for South Ripley High School. Rhonda was a member of the Holton Christian Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 25th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Mitch Harrell of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Arriest Harrell Terry, 93, of Holton passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Ridgeview Health Campus in Lawrenceburg. She was born near Delaware on January 2, 1921 the daughter of Louis and Margaret Plump Anderson. She was married to Wilfred Harrell in 1951 and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1986. She was married to Earl Udey in 1988 and he preceded her in death on October 28, 1999, and she was married to Okla Terry on March 17, 2004 and he preceded her in death in 2012. Survivors include step-son David Terry and step-daughter Janice Dougherty; one sister Louise White of Milan and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Neva Huntington, and her brothers Martin, James, and Robert Anderson. Mrs. Terry attended the Delaware Elementary School and was a 1938 graduate of Delaware-Jackson High School in Napoleon. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University and spent 24 years teaching in the McCordsville, Burney, Napoleon, Cross Plains, Holton, and South Ripley school systems. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Aurora and a former member of the Holton Christian Church. Arriest was also a member of the Ripley County Historical Society and the Ripley County Retired Teachers. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 17th at 3pm at the Holton Christian Church with Bro. Bob McCreary and Mitch Harrell officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1pm until time of services at the church. Beverly Lee Shook, 84, of Butlerville, formerly of Benham passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at the home of his son Chris in Butlerville. He was born near Canaan in Jefferson County on April 13, 1930 the son of Cecil and Iva Thornton Shook. Survivors include two sons Danny Shook of Louisville and Chris (Stephanie) Shook of Butlerville; one daughter Jackie (Phil) Amos of Holton; 9 grandchildren,  30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister Roberta Isabel of San Diego.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Steve, his infant twin children Terri Lee and Iva Marie, his sisters Lillian Hankins and Marcella McIntosh, and his brothers Tony Shook and Ralph Shook. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving from 1949 to 1952. He served with the 567th Medical Ambulance Company and received the Medical Badge, Korean Service Medal, and the U.N. Offensive-Chinese Communist Force Intervention –Second Korean Winter badge.  Mr. Shook worked for 30 years as a mechanic for Hoosier Engineering in Dublin, Ohio and was a member of the Brown Township American Legion in Friendship. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 13th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Dale Day officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Brown Township American Legion. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5pm to 8pm. Alan L. Dunaway, 61, of Greensburg passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at his home. He was born at Biloxi, Mississippi on October 21, 1952 and was raised in Ripley County the son of Robert and Donna Feltenberger Dunaway. He was married to Myrna McKittrick on December 28, 1970 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Curtis (Trista) Dunaway of Columbus; one daughter Brandi (Josh) Spellman of Indianapolis; grandchildren Gabriella Garcia and Alan Dunaway; his mother-in-law Virginia McDonald of Fancy Gap, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Calvin. Mr. Dunaway was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War where he served with the Fourth Infantry Division of the Sixth Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Sharpshooter Badge. In civilian life Alan worked for 25 years for Delta Faucet in Greensburg and also worked for Navistar in Indianapolis for 11years. Alan was a member of the Church of Christ at Greensburg. A celebration of Alan’s life will be held on Monday, August 4th from 4pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.

 

Annabella Mariresse Montgomery, 5, of Benham passed away Monday, July 21, 1014 at her home. She was born in Cincinnati on September 24, 2008 the daughter of Barry Montgomery and Kaitlyn McClure. Survivors include her mother Kaitlyn McClure of Benham; her father Barry Montgomery of Rising Sun; step-father Patrick Stroud of Benham; brothers and sisters Ahlanie Grossman, Lucy Montgomery, Masin Stroud, Benjamin Walton, Miley Stroud, and Maria Stroud; grandparents Judy Allen of Sunman, Kenny and Gina Stewart of Madison, Joe and Gayla McClure of New Point, and Norma and Rob Montgomery of Rising Sun; great-grandparents Jan Daniels of Rising Sun and Buddy and Mary Demaree of New Point. Carlin Sarah Davis, 16, of Milton, Kentucky passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014 at her home. She was born in Greensburg on July 14, 1998. Survivors include her father John Curran of Cincinnati and her mother Amy Davis of Milton, Kentucky; one sister Zada Lutz of Muncie; her maternal grandparents Wayne and Cindy Vanosdol of Holton along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Carlin had attended Deer Park High School in Cincinnati where she was a cheerleader and played the flute in the band. She would have been a junior this fall at Trimble County High School in Bedford. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 24th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bob McCreary of the Holton Christian Church officiating. Delores C. Kabbes, 80, of Cross Plains passed away Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio. She was born in Cincinnati on June 30, 1934 the daughter of Albert and Helen Hautz Riestenberg. She was married to Matt Kabbes on May 14, 1955 and he preceded her in death on December 28, 2012. Survivors include one son Mike Kabbes of Cincinnati; three daughters Susan (Tom) Spielman of Aurora, Pamela Kabbes of Salem and Kathleen Kreimer of Florence Kentucky; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; one brother Ray Riestenberg of Cincinnati; one sister Helen Mueller of Harrison, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Joan Jansen, her brothers Stan and Al Riestenberg, and her daughter-in-law Bonnie Kabbes. Mrs. Kabbes was a 1952 graduate of Seton High School in Cincinnati. In her younger years she coached kids in softball and volleyball and had worked for several years as a cook at LaSalle High School in Cincinnati. Delores was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Osgood. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 22nd at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Sister Shirley Gerth officiating. Larry F. Curry, 72, of Versailles passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at his home. He was born at Batesville on April 19, 1942 the son of Halstead and Gladys Monroe Curry. He was married to Nancy Sandman and she survives. Other survivors include one son Larry David Curry of Holton; one daughter Larissa (Chris) Garrett of Versailles; grandchildren Ashley (Steve) Franklin, Tony (Liza) Lloyd, Janna Lloyd, Suzanne Fiset, Ellianna Waldron, Brittany (Eric) Tunny, Larissa Curry, Alexandra Curry, and Douglas Curry; 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Curry was a 1960 graduate of Versailles High School. He spent his entire working career as a trucker and was currently employed with Flatland Farms at Rexville. He had also driven for Yelton Trucking in Lawrenceburg, Baylor Trucking in Milan, Robinson & Sons Trucking in Sunman, and was owner and operator of Curry Trucking in Versailles. A memorial service for Larry will be held on Saturday, July 12th at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Alfred F. Young, 89, of Napoleon passed away Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born near Napoleon on February 3, 1925 the son of Clem and Clara Kohrman Young. He was married to Rita Duerstock on June 15, 1949 and she preceded him in death on May 14, 2008. Survivors include two sons Dale (Becky) Young and Larry (Pam) Young both of Napoleon; two daughters Janice (Kenny) Fry and Nancy (Bob) Obermeyer also of Napoleon; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one brother Arthur (Carol) Young of Greensburg. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law Deborah Young, his grandson Brian Obermeyer, and his brother Raymond Young. Mr. Young farmed his entire life and was also a former employee of Williamson Heating and Cooling and also Bohn Aluminum, both in Greensburg. He was a 54 year member of St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, July 11th at 10am at St. Maurice Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rosary services at 8pm. James Ichiro Furiya, 91, of Versailles passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Tri Health Hospice in Hamilton, Ohio. He was born in Sacramento, California on June 19, 1923 the son of Jinnosuku and Ume Masia Furiya. He was married to Teruko Tabata and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Keven Furiya of Seattle, Washington and Alvin Furiya of Noblesville; one daughter Linda Furiya of Shelburne, Vermont, and also two grandsons. Following the death of his mother at age four, James was sent to Japan to be raised by his grandmother in the shadow of Mt. Fuji. During the aftermath of the 1930 depression, James was adopted and raised in Manchuria. At age 19 he was drafted into the army and was captured during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945 and was held as a Prisoner of War for three years in Russia. Returning to Japan after the war, he waited ten years to regain his American citizenship, during which time he trained as a chicken sexer. It was this profession that brought him to the Midwest and during the 1950s he traveled to chicken hatcheries and farms throughout Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. He resided briefly in Osgood, but Mr. Furiya was a 50 year resident of Versailles where he pursued his passion for food, wine making, and gardening. Mr. & Mrs. Furiya attended the Tyson United Methodist Church. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles is in charge of arrangements.

 

Loretta J. Rose, 75, of Versailles passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. She was born near Freedom in Owen County, Indiana on June 27, 1938 the daughter of Forest and Zella Noel Strouse. She was married to Wayne Rose on September 17, 1960 and he preceded her in death on June 16, 1997. Survivors include three sons Donald (Paula) Rose of Cross Plains, Kenneth Rose of Seymour, and Daniel (Sherry) Rose of Wagner, Oklahoma; three daughters Linda King and friend Jerry Durham of Seymour, Nancy Adams of Versailles, and Muriel (Rev. Sherman) Hughes of Dillsboro; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Richard Strouse. Mrs. Rose was a 1956 graduate of Patricksburg High School. She was employed with US Shoe in Osgood from 1962 to 1999 and had also worked for the Mirus Corporation in Versailles. Loretta was a member of the Versailles Amvets and attended the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 30th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Visitation will be Monday from 10am until time of services. Phillip E. Powell, 83, of Versailles passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at Arbor Grove Village in Greensburg. He was born near Aurora on December 30, 1930 the son of Walter and Ethel Elwell Powell. He was married to Ruth Ann Rodgers on December 12, 1951 and his wife of 62 years survives. Other survivors include two sons Harold “Gomer” (Sandra) Powell of Milan and Vincent (Jackie) Powell of Versailles; three daughters Myrtle (Stephen) Redd of Greensburg, Theresa (Larry) Miller of Versailles, and Debra (Doug) Wetzler of Auburn, Georgia; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Christine Powell, his brother Harold Powell, and his sisters Mary McIntosh and Emma Francis Powell. Mr. Powell was a 1950 graduate of Versailles High School. He was a former employee of Russell Braley’s Clover Leaf Store in Versailles, the Greensburg IGA, and retired in 1993 after 42 and a half years with Aurora Casket Company. Phillip was a member of the Versailles Wesleyan Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 26th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Norman G. Dresselhaus, 88, of Friendship passed away Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at Friendship on May 18, 1926 the son of George and Mayme Reamer Dresselhaus. He was married to Viola Kuhlman on May 26, 1951 and his wife of 63 years survives. Other survivors include two sons Rick (Christine) Dresselhaus of Lanesville, and Robert (Cindy) Dresselhaus of Yuma, Arizona; 6 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; one sister Marcella Scudder of Greenwood; sister-in-law Joyce Dresselhaus of Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Dale and Howard Dresselhaus. Mr. Dresselhaus was a 1944 graduate of Cross Plains High School and was a member of the Wildcats 1942 Sectional championship team. He was a veteran of WWII where he served as a Tech Sergeant with the Army in Central Europe. He received the WWII Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, 2 Overseas Service Bars, Army Occupation of Germany Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and was a rifle expert.  In civilian life Norman worked for Stegemoller Electric, Plumbing, and Heating in Friendship and retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground where he worked as a heating and cooling technician. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat where he served as a trustee and also taught Sunday School. He was also a member of the Brown Township American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 11th at 11am at the St. John Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat with Pastor Gary Wickert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the Brown Township American Legion. Cindy Brooks, 61, of Benham passed away Monday, June 2, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born in Indianapolis on August 18, 1952 and was married to Gary Brooks on January 31, 1987 and he survives. Other survivors include four daughters Jill (Rob) Winter, Melinda (Sam) Barthelow, and Autumn Anderson and her fiancé Randall all of Indianapolis, and Kathy Vandine and her fiancé Eric of Marion; 10 grandchildren; one brother Ron (Shirley) Loos of New Palestine. Mrs. Brooks was a 1970 graduate of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. She was a homemaker, and a former employee of Kelley’s Greenhouse in North Vernon and the Versailles State Park. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 5th at 2pm at the Benham United Methodist Church with Pastor Jerry Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at the church from 1pm until time of services. Glenn D. Risk, 93, of Versailles passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born at Benham on December 27, 1920 the son of Glenn and Ida Fuehrer Risk. He was married to Helen Fields on September 11, 1951 and his wife of 62 years survives. Other survivors include his sister-in-law Mrs. Josephine Risk of Indianapolis along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Risk, and his sisters Lois Bryant and Violet Elles. Mr. Risk was a 1939 graduate of Cross Plains High School. He was an Army veteran of WWII and served with the 80th Division, 106th Infantry, 424th Infantry Anti-Tank Company in Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. T/Sgt. Risk was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in action against the enemy in Eastern Belgium on December 16, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. Other awards received included the American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Service Badge, and the WWII Victory Medal. While serving with the 106th, also known as the “Lion Division”, Mr. Risk drove a tank during battle while also loading and firing the guns by himself, a job usually reserved for three men. In civilian life, Glenn was a trucker having been employed with Huber and Huber, Mayflower, and retired in 1977 from Smith Transfer. He and Helen enjoyed bowling, and for his many years of driving he received the “Million miles in a Mack award.” He was a member of the Benham United Methodist Church and was a Life Member of the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 1pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Sandy Becker of the Versailles American Legion officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery with military honors by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11am until time of services. Ruth Downey, 97, of Versailles, formerly of Milan passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born in Greensburg on December 22, 1916 the daughter of Ruby and Ella Martin Brown. She was married to Paul Downey and he preceded her in death in 1976. Mrs. Downey provided home health care for the elderly in her community. She was a member of the Versailles Eastern Star. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 11am at the Rising Sun Cemetery with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Wilbur Leroy Myers, 85, of Holton passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2014 at Our Hospice of South central Indiana in Columbus.  A Memorial Service will be held at Holton Christian Church on Saturday, May 31 with condolences from 12:00 – 2:00 pm and the service immediately following at 2:00.  Mr. Myers was a life long resident of Holton and a long time member of Holton Christian Church. He enjoyed working in his community and was lovingly known as the “unofficial Mayor” of Holton.  He was a member of the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce and the Holton Cemetery Board for several years. Mr. Myers proudly served as a member of the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 where he spent most of his time stationed in Germany. He retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1985 after 34 years of eployment. Born July 27, 1928 in Holton, IN. Mr. Myers was the son of the late Harry and Abbie (Lewis) Myers. He married Wilma (Doyle) Vaughn on July 27, 1959 and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Vicki (Tom) Wilson of Holton and April (Robert) McCreary of Batesville; son, Steve (Teresa) Vaughn of Holton; Grandchildren, Jeff (Aimee) Cornett, Jenna (Cornett) Smith, Kristy (Matt) Werner, Amber Vaughn, Heather (Les) Scott, Bethany Vaughn, Lucas Vaughn, Carlie Vaughn and Anna McCreary; 11 great-grandchildren; Sisters, Marcella (Myers) Oropesa of State College, PA; Francis Myers of Sun City Center, FL; Thelma (Myers) Wilson of Goshen, OH; Alma (Myers) Julos of Anaheim, CA. Several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ginny Dunn and Violet Tyler; two brothers, Albert and Paul Myers.  Memorials may be given to the Holton Christian Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

 

Gaberella Wiley Parker, 95, of Versailles passed away Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. She was born at Stamping Ground in Scott County, Kentucky on January 12, 1919 the daughter of Edward and Addie Strange Wiley. She was married to Willard Parker on June 17, 1939 and he preceded her in death on November 7, 1996. Survivors include two daughters Gardella (Milton) Richards of Otisco, and Sandra (Larry) Noah of Versailles; four grandchildren Aura (Ben) McKinley of Jeffersonville, Alena (Matt) Kieffer of Evansville, Daniel (Leighanne) Noah of Greenfield, and David (Amanda) Noah of Greensburg; great-grandchildren Maela McKinley, Cash Kieffer, Carter Kieffer, and Addison, Andrew, Derek, and Brennan Noah; two sisters Evelyn Dempsey of Frankfort, Kentucky, and Marcille Stewart of Georgetown, Kentucky. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Pauline Payton, Saraphine Hall, and Sue, Mary, and Bertha Wiley, and her brothers Frances, William, Alvin, Coleman, Joseph, Thurston, and Benton Wiley. Mrs. Parker was a former supervisor for the Union Garment Company in Frankfort, Kentucky and in 1961 she began work for Reliance Electric in Madison where she retired in 1985. Beverly Ann (Jackson) McNeelan 79 of Whiteland passed away Thursday, May 9, 2014 at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.  She was born April 30, 1935 in the Tanglewood community, Indiana to Eldon Ethan Jackson and Goldah Ann (Little) Jackson.  She married Martin J. McNeelan on January 30, 1954 in Dabney, Indiana, and he survives.  She was a 1953 graduate of Holton High School.  She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Holton, and attended Community Congregational Church in Franklin.  She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #333 in Versailles, Indiana.  She enjoyed family, gardening, reading, traveling, boating, scuba diving, fishing and flying.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who faithfully represented the wife and mother in Proverbs 31.  Most recently, she had been a realtor with her husband Martin at Remax Select Realtors in Greenwood for thirteen years.  Survivors include her husband Martin J. McNeelan of Whiteland; two sons Martin J. McNeelan, Jr. (Jackie) of Whiteland and Mikel J. McNeelan of Belleair Bluff, Florida; three daughters Becky A. Pulley (Andy) of Falls River, Massachusetts; Babs A. Hull (Mike) of Greenwood; Brenda Fields (Jerry) of Whiteland; and thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by siblings Lloyd Jackson of Indianapolis, Frank Jackson (Sharon) of Bargersville, Ethan Jackson (Joyce) of Indianapolis, Rollin Jackson (Juanita) of Greenwood, and one sister Beth Jackson Taylor of Montgomery, Alabama.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Larry Jackson and two sisters Winifred Jackson Smith and Janet Jackson. Helen L. Fuehrer, 79, of Versailles passed away at her home. She was born at Batesville on February 15, 1935 the daughter of Wilbur and Dora Little Jarvis. Survivors include two sons Rick (Robyn) Fuehrer of Bearden, Arkansas and David (Terrie) Fuehrer of Ormond Beach, Florida; two grandchildren Ashley Crabtree of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Camerin Fuehrer of Ormond Beach; three great-grandchildren Daniel, Robbie, and Wyatt Crabtree; one brother Ronald Jarvis of Vevay; one sister Faye Bradfield of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Fuehrer was a 1953 graduate of Versailles High School. She had worked as a house parent at the Indiana School for the Blind in Indianapolis. She had also served as a page for the Indiana Senate and was a former employee of the Jefferson Proving Ground and the Daytona Beach Florida News Journal. Charles H. Meyers, 91, of Versailles passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Waters of Dillsboro Manor. He was born in Osgood on April 1, 1923 the son of Charles H. and Laura Hess Meyers. He was married to Beatrice Wells in 1963 and she preceded him in death on April 29, 1998. Survivors include three sons Kevan Meyers of Dillsboro, Charles L. Meyers of Cincinnati, and Michael Meyers of Glenwood, Minnesota; one daughter Tamela Broad of Winamac. Mr. Meyers worked on the bottling floor at Seagrams for 30 years retiring in 1985. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Arthur Kieffer, 90, of New Marion passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born near New Marion on October 21, 1923 the son of John and Margaret Kieffer. He was married to Eileen Gigerich on July 22, 1950 and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters Kathleen Kieffer of Indianapolis, Carol (Sam) Byard and Joan (John) Hanna both of Versailles; 3 grandchildren Craig C. Byard of Versailles, Kile Carter and his fiancé Kendra of Indianapolis, and Joel (Kelly) Carter of Osgood; 5 great-grandchildren; one brother Walter (June) Kieffer of Versailles, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Lucille Colley and Geneva Westmeier, and his brothers Paul, Martin, and David Kieffer. Mr. Kieffer was a 1942 graduate of New Marion High School and was a veteran of WWII. He served in the Army Air Force at the rank of Sergeant participating in campaigns and battles in the Ardennes, Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. He was discharged on October 12, 1945 and served with the Army Air Force Reserves until August 23, 1952. Mr. Kieffer was a former employee with the Ripley County Poor Farm. In 1987 he retired after 26 years with Reliance Electric in Madison. Arthur was a 90 year member of the St. Magdalene Catholic Church and was also a member of the Versailles American Legion. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 28th at 10am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Madison with Father Shaun Whittington and Father Frank Eckstein officiating. Burial will be in the St. Magdalene Cemetery at Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Archie D. Sanders, 78, of Versailles passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. He was born at Hope on July 27, 1935 and was raised in Cortland by Oscar and Lydia White. He was married to Judy Patterson Peck on February 13, 1993 and she survives. Other survivors include four daughters Marjorie Lesley, Donna (Mick) Mounts, and Norma Sanders Horn all of Lafayette, and Carra (Larry) Origer of Danville; one son Chris (Kari) Peck of Versailles; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren;  four sisters Evelyn Schuyler of Westport, Betty Keel of Greensburg, Mary (Meredith) Payne of Freetown, and Norma Jean Ray of Shelbyville; also his mother-in-law Mrs. Wilma Patterson of Versailles.  He was preceded in death by his son Oscar Dean Sanders, his great-granddaughter Beautie Sanders, two brothers, and three sisters. Mr. Sanders was a 1953 graduate of Cortland High School in Jackson County and  received his BS degree from Purdue University and his Masters Degree from Indiana University. He taught vocational agriculture at Tekonsha High School in Michigan and also at Cortland High School. Archie was a Vocational re-hab director for job placement for people with disabilities and was Executive Director of Sandstone Industries Sheltered Workshop in Madison and started several other workshops in surrounding counties. He was also Director of vocational rehab at the Madison State Hospital and was Vocational Consultant for the government and later for attorneys advising and representing clients for Social Security disabilities. He participated in the National Amputee Golf Association where he won many championships, including the World Champion One Arm Long Drive contest in Scotland.  Archie was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church, Madison Sons of the American Legion Post 9, Madison Moose Lodge, National Amputee Golf Association, and was past president of the Jefferson County ARC. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 29th at 11am at the Tyson United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Dixon officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 4pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Tuesday at the church. John R. Repasy, 68, of Cincinnati passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was born in Cincinnati on February 5, 1946. Survivors include one sister Tanya (Kenny) Benham of Osgood; nephew Jonathan (Kayla) Benham of Osgood; niece Hannah (Eric) Schuler of Milan; also a great-nephew Corbin Benham. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Inez Repasy. Mr. Repasy was a former employee of DWF Flowers and worked as a print press operator for Viva Color in Cincinnati. Graveside rites will be held on Thursday, April 24th at 10am at the Benham Cemetery with Rev. Garland Rudd officiating. Roy Dobbs, 60, of New Marion passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born at Batesville on March 12, 1954 the son of Leonard and Margaret Miller Dobbs. He was married to Kathy Brinson on November 17, 1973 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Lafe Dobbs of New Marion; one daughter Dee Dobbs Livingston of Dillsboro; two grandchildren Braesyn and Brinley Livingston; one brother Joe Dobbs of Batesville; one sister Mary (Donald) Nealis of Canaan;  sister-in-law Rita Dobbs of Pulaski, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert Dobbs. Mr. Dobbs was a 1972 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was a former employee of Ohio Rod in Versailles and for fourteen years drove a school bus for the Holton and South Ripley Schools. Roy was also the owner and operator of Dobbs Farms and was a former member of the New Marion Fire Department. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd at 3pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Steve Culp of the New Marion Baptist Church officiating. Carrol E. Adkins, 83, of Versailles passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born at Boggstown on November 10, 1930 the son of Delza and Anna Marquardt Adkins. He was married to Freda Turner on September 20, 1948 and she survives. Other survivors include two sons Rick (Darla) Adkins of Seymour and Carl (Sandy) Adkins of Crothersville; two daughters Dianne (Chris) Pearson of North Manchester and Susan Adkins of Bloomington; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Katherine Parrish, and his brothers Jim, Charles, and Alfred Adkins. Mr. Adkins was a 1948 graduate of Versailles High School and was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in Japan with the US Army as a Private First Class and received the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He was a former employee of Monsanto, the Indiana State Highway Department, the Versailles Dunbrik Company, and Hitz Greenhouse in Versailles. Mr. Adkins retired in 1992 after 30 years with the Jefferson Proving Ground where he worked as an Explosive Test Operator. Carrol was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church, Versailles Masonic Lodge, and the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 23rd at 11am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Mullins officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Charles O. Wagoner, 76, of Lake Placid, Florida, formerly of Holton passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at his home. He was born near Borden on September 15, 1937 the son of Alfred and Verna Boardman Wagoner. He was married to Eva Mae Franklin on December 6, 1959 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Charles Mark Wagoner and his companion Charlotte Patterson of St. Petersburg, Florida; two daughters Annette (Mark) Sims of North Vernon and Barbette (Chuck) Wickstrom of Benham; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; one sister Jo Ann Mills of Lakeland, Florida; sister-in-law Susan Wagoner also of Lakeland;  special friends Michael and Terri Beebe of Riverview, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gene Wagoner. Mr. Wagoner was a 1955 graduate of North Vernon High School. He was a Master Electrician and retired from the Macdill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida in 2002. He had also been employed with Arvins, Cummins, Kroger, and the former Farm Chemical Service in Holton. Charlie was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, the Holton Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Murat Shrine Club, Moose Lodge at North Vernon, Dixie County Bass Club, and was an honorary member of the Placid Masonic Lodge. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Tuesday at the church. Bruce O. Richardson, 66, of Osgood passed away Monday, April 14, 2014 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born at Taylorsville in Spencer County, Kentucky on October 3, 1947 the son of Vernon and Rose Ann Harley Richardson. He was married to Louella Cummings on December 31, 1977 and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters Amy (Jason) Richardson-Lambert of Greensburg, April (Josh) Richardson-Kissell of Versailles, and Alisha (Adam) Eadens of Versailles; 4 grandchildren; one nephew Jason Richardson of Manilla. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father James Perry, and his brothers Lloyd Richardson and Roy Allen Richardson. Mr. Richardson was a 1966 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School. He worked for 13 years for the Ripley County Farm Bureau Co-op and then worked for an additional 13 years for Wal-Mart in Greensburg. Bruce was also a Ham Radio operator. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 17th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Susan M. Huffmeyer, 48, of Napoleon passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 at her home. She was born at Batesville on September 24, 1965. She was married to Douglas Huffmeyer on November 15, 1986 and he survives. Other survivors include her parents Raymond and Rose (Simmermeyer) Weisenbach of Morris; her mother-in-law Alice Huffmeyer of Napoleon; five daughters Holly (Matt) Holland of Milroy, Audrey (Jeff) Fuller of Osgood, Heather, a sophomore at Purdue University, Lindsey, and Allyson both at home; one son Corey at home; three brothers Joe (Bonnie) Weisenbach and John Weisenbach both of Greensburg, and Jeff (Cindy) Weisenbach of Batesville; four sisters Kim (Leroy) Hountz of Sunman, Shari (Mark) Strassell of Morris, Sandy (Dave) Volk, and Kristy Weisenbach both of Greensburg. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law Norman Huffmeyer, and her brother-in-law Mike Huffmeyer. Mrs. Huffmeyer was a 1983 graduate of East Central High School and a 1985 graduate of the Institute of Medical Technology in Cincinnati. She had worked for Margaret Mary Community Hospital as a medical assistant. Susan was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Napoleon. Willie C. Taylor, 66, of Holton passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at his home. He was born at Nashville, Tennessee on February 22, 1947 the son of Willie Sr. and Sylvia Goad Taylor. He was married to Carrol Kelly on May 19, 1969 and she survives. Other survivors include one son Kenny (Judy) Taylor of Bankston, Alabama; one daughter Teresa (John) O’Neil of Friendship; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Taylor was a 1965 graduate of Red Boiling Springs High School and was also a 32 year employee of Cummins Engine in Columbus. He had also worked for the Indiana State Highway and for Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 8th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Holton West Cemetery. Nellie M. Pollard, 99, of Versailles passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky on November 12, 1914 the daughter of William Madison and Mary Elizabeth Morris Hall. She was married to Forest Elmer Pollard on December 24, 1932 and he preceded her in death on October 1, 1987. Survivors include three sons Elmer Lee Pollard of Mooresville, Phillip (Jan) Pollard of Bloomburg, Colorado, and Maurice (Mary Alice) Pollard of Waynesville, Ohio; one daughter Edna “Polly” (Donald) Hunger of Versailles; sons-in-law Ray Miller of Burnside, Kentucky, and Russell Knowlton of Osgood; 21 grandchildren 37 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her daughters Elaine Miller and Janet Knowlton, daughter-in-law Patty Pollard, grandchildren Angie Hoskins, Patrick Pollard, and Betty Lou Pollard,  great-grandson Little Pennington, brothers Jerry, Hart, Luther, and Chris Hall, and her sisters Tempie Yancey, Vergie Pollard, Billie James, and Hattie Hall. Mrs. Pollard was homemaker and a member of the Ripley County Red Hatters and the Do-A-Lot Home Economics Club. Nell was also a 45 year member of the Versailles Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 1st at 12pm at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Sally A. Davison, 58, of Versailles passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born at the Margaret Mary Hospital on April 20, 1955 the daughter of James and Odella Fruchtnicht Booster. Survivors include one daughter Annie (Brandon) Knueven of Versailles; grandchildren Hunter and Julie Knueven; one brother Kenneth (Janet) Booster of Plainfield, Illinois; one sister Janice (Nick) Minkler of Lynchburg, Virginia; two nieces, three nephews, two great-nieces, and three great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Eric Davison. Ms. Davison was a 1973 graduate of South Ripley High School. She was a former employee of Versailles House and Garden, Touch of Country Florist, and was the current owner and operator of Davison’s Floral in Versailles. Sally was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Napoleon. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Jennifer Owen officiating. Charles L. Flick, Jr., 87, of the Hopewell community near Holton passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at the Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born near Holton on December 7, 1926 the son of Charles and Emma Detraz Flick. He was married to Mabel Comer on October 15, 1949 and his wife of 64 years survives. Other survivors include one sister, Margaret Ann (Herbert) Wilken of Anderson, and also 17 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Flick was a 1944 graduate of Holton High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War where he served as a Corporal receiving the Army Occupation of Germany Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was also a farmer, and worked at Cummins Engine in Columbus from 1956 to 1983. Charlie was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and the Osgood Masonic Lodge. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8th at 11am at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Barringer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home and from 10am Saturday until time of services at the Hopewell Baptist Church. Carolyn Jean Moreland, 65, of Versailles, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born in Batesville on August 28, 1948, the daughter of William and Owanna Ray Stratton. She was married to Max Moreland on February 8, 1965 and he survives. Other survivors include her mother, Mrs. Owanna Stratton of Versailles; four daughters, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Kettinger of Commerce, Michigan, Chris Cubr of Versailles, Joy (David) Mooney of Bremen, Georgia, and Beth (Gaveth) Thomas of Kennesaw, Georgia; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Melody (Mike) Burnett of St. Paul; two brothers, Rodney (Becky) Stratton of Holton and Robert (Jody) Stratton of ringboro, Ohio.She was preceded in death by her father; and her sons, Christopher Scott Moreland and Phillip Andrew Moreland.Mrs. Moreland was a 1966 graduate of Holton High School and was a homemaker. Carol was a former Girl Scout leader and a member of the Dabney Baptist Church. Garold W. Vankirk, 78, of Napoleon passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his home. He was born near Batesville on July 26, 1935 the son of Cloyd and Edna Eaton Vankirk. He was married to Darlene Kreuzman on August 11, 1956 and she preceded him in death on October 1, 2009. Survivors include two sons Bill (Jane Ann) Vankirk, and Bob “Mouse” (Tena) Vankirk both of Napoleon; one daughter Kathy (Brian) Samples of Versailles; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; one brother Raymond Vankirk of Morris.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, and his twin brother Harold Vankirk. Mr. Vankirk was a 1953 graduate of Napoleon High School. He was co-owner of Schuler Products in Napoleon until 1964 when he began work in the tool and die department of Batesville Casket Company where worked for 40 years retiring in 2004. Garold was a member of St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon and was a 60 year member of the Napoleon Fire Department. Charles J. “Duke” Owens, 82, of Osgood passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at Clarksburg in Decatur County on January 22, 1931 the son of Glenn and Ethel Goodpaster Owens. Survivors include two brothers Joe (Susan) Owens, and John (Kathryn) Owens both of Osgood; two sisters Lou Truelblood of Salem, and Georgia (Jerry) Adkinson of Elrod. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold, Railey, Russell, Jim, Eugene, and Dennis Owens, and his sister Faye Mills. Mr. Owens was a farmer and former employee of the Ripley County Highway Department. Duke was a member of the Cedar Creek Community Church and the CB Helping Hands Club. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 28th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Joe Owens officiating. Helen B. Turner of Osgood passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 at her residence. She was born at Rushville, Indiana, the daughter of Ferda and Frances Ryckman Montgomery. She married Ira Turner on a family farm in Rush County, Indiana on June 12, 1953. Survivors include three daughters Diana Turner of Osgood, Linda (Scott) Bailey of Middletown, Ohio and Tina (Tom) Holmes of Harrison, Ohio, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers Kenny (Joyce), Lee (Mary), Tom all of Rushville, three sisters Ruth (Jay) McClarnon of Greenfield, Linda (Danny) Matthews of Rushville, Darlene (Aaron) Young of Rushville. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her son Mike in 1988. Mrs. Turner was a 1953 graduate of Rushville High School. Mr. and Mrs. Turner owned and operated the H I T Department Store in Osgood. Helen was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church and she loved to play bingo. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 26th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Irene Lavonne Messer, 59, of Cross Plains passed away Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born in Hazard, Kentucky on January 19, 1955 the daughter of Arnold and Delphia Beverly Combs. She was married to Charles Messer and he preceded her in death on April 15, 2002. Survivors include one son Gary Grigsby and his companion Tammy Hollandsworth of Cross Plains; three daughters Michelle (Eric) Hurst of Cross Plains, Audrey  Grigsby and her companion Chris Lothridge of Versailles, and Danielle Messer of Cross Plains; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; one brother Randy Combs of Ackworth, Georgia; three sisters Jennifer Combs and Brenda Adams both of Madison, and Glenda Leach of Hanover. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Ellis Combs and Robin Combs. Mrs. Messer was a 1973 graduate of South Ripley High School. She was an LPN and had last worked at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. Irene was a member of the Cross Plains United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 20th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Jerry Brooks officiating. Michael D. Ensinger, 56, of Versailles passed away Friday, February 14, 2014 in Greensburg.  He was born at Batesville on June 1, 1957 the son of Robert and Phyllis Gross Ensinger. Survivors include his mother and step-father Phyllis and Jim Utter of Versailles; his companion Donna Lane of Aurora; two daughters Brandy Herbert and her fiancé Bill McRoberts of Versailles and Katrina Ensinger of Versailles; grandchildren Katelyn Farrell, Adriona Herbert, Sophia Lane, and Zoey Ensinger; one sister Diana Foster and her fiancé Tim Lawler of Cincinnati. Mr. Ensinger was a 1975 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School and was employed with Tom Sibbitt Chevrolet in Greensburg as a parts manager. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and was active in sand drag racing. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18th at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Don Buck and Rev. Steve Allen officiating. Roy G. Cordell, 77, of Versailles passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. Mr. Cordell was born in Dry Fork, Virginia the son of George and Lulu Cordell. He married Mary Pierce on July 21, 1987 and she survives. Other survivors include three children, Deborah (Myron) Pluskota of Spring Hill, Florida, Brian Cordell of Hamilton, Ohio, Pamela Sue (Steven) Bosslet of Richlands, Virginia and his step-children Maria (Albert) Sturgill of Versailles and Forest Huddleston of Milan, brother Don (Joan) Cordell, Sister Nell Cordell, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Sherry Lynn Honnerlaws. Roy was a former manager for Montgomery Ward and retired as a truck driver for Rapid Delivery in Cincinnati. He and his wife own and operate Four Paws Animal Boarding in Versailles. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 17th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Garrett R. Goodpaster, 23, of Versailles passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at Madison on April 27, 1990 the son of Robert and Denise Adkins Goodpaster. Survivors include his parents; his sister Annie; maternal grandmother Mrs. Jean Adkins of Versailles, along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also as part of Garrett’s family were his caregivers the late Carolyn Lee, Cindy Stephen, and his cousin Shannon Adkins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Carl and Muriel Goodpaster, and his maternal grandfather Alfred Adkins. He was a 2011 graduate of South Ripley High School and was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church. Garrett loved go carts and made many friends and touched many lives in his 23 years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8th at 10am at the Tanglewood Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Mullins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 9am until time of services Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Tanglewood Baptist Church or Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Lois Mockbee, 82, of Milan passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Elmrock in Knott County, Kentucky on January 22, 1932 the daughter of Jasper and Mary Compton Fugate. She was married to Harry G. Mockbee on October 9, 1955 and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters Ruth (Rev. Gordon) Shinkle of Lawrenceburg and Nancy (Scott) Kohlmeier of Greendale; one son John (Belinda) Mockbee of Versailles; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers Jay (Sarah) Fugate of Milan and William Edward Fugate of Holton; two sisters Gail (Leonard) Haase of Milan and Phyllis (Bob) Crosthwaite of Moores Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Kenneth E. Mockbee, her brothers Granville Fugate and Herbert Fugate, and her sister Pauline Carden. Mrs. Mockbee was a 1950 graduate of Milan High School. She was a former employee of Busteed’s 5 &10 in Milan, Bruns IGA in Milan, and was also an independent beauty operator. Lois was a member of the Cedar Creek Community Church near Osgood and had served for several years as a den mother and troop leader for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was an outstanding cook and seamstress, making many of her children’s clothes, and also enjoyed bowling. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8th at 12pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Garland Rudd of the Cedar Creek Community Church and Lois’s son-in-law Rev. Gordon Shinkle of the Dearborn Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Visitation will be Saturday from 10am until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Cedar Creek Community Church or Rescue 30 in care of the funeral home.

 

Vivian Storie, 86, of Madison passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She was born at Versailles on March 28, 1927 the daughter of Charles and Irene White Demaree. She was married to Charles F. Storie on November 27, 1992 and he survives. Other survivors include one daughter Marilyn Hale of College Corner, Ohio; 2 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; one brother Jack (Betty) Demaree of Versailles; one sister Norma Lee Meacham of Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Charles F. “Sonny” Demaree, James Collinsworth, and Eddie Demaree, and her sisters Opal Collinsworth, Edna Horton, Faye Sloan, and Fern Strimple. Mrs. Storie was a 1945 graduate of Versailles High School and worked for several years in maintenance at the Jefferson Proving Ground. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Senior Centers in Versailles and Madison. Vivian was a member of the Tanglewood Baptist Church and a 67 year member of the Versailles American Legion Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 1st at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be Saturday from 10am until time of services. The Versailles American Legion Auxiliary will conduct services Saturday at 11am at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery or the Diabetes Foundation in care of the funeral home.

 

James L. Arney, 67, of Versailles passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. He was born in Cincinnati on September 9, 1946 the son of Burgess and Marie Gentile Arney. He was married to Melody Geisler on April 17, 1971 and she preceded him in death on January 7, 2011. Survivors include three sons Steve (Cassandra) Arney of Versailles, Bill (Susan) Arney of Austin, Texas, and Rodney (Dorothy) Arney of Versailles; 7 grandchildren; one brother Frank Arney of Versailles; two sisters Charlotte Griffin of Edgewood, Kentucky and Marcia (Raymond) Steele of Tennessee. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Arney was a 1964 graduate of Versailles High School. He was a farmer and along with his father and brother operated the Versailles Dunbrik Company. Jim was a member of the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 23rd at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Dixon of the Tyson United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion or Tyson United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

 

Alice K. Meyers, 86, of Cincinnati passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Care Center in Cincinnati. She was born at Rushville on April 27, 1927 the daughter of Rufus and Inez Muir Huntington. Survivors include two daughters Sandy (Dan) Betzold of Blue Ash, Ohio and Cassandra Warner of Cincinnati; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; one brother Earl (Doris) Huntington of Cincinnati. Mrs. Meyers worked in quality control at the Davey Corporation in Cincinnati. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11th at 11am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Bonnie Bohn officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be from 10am until time of services. Memorials may be given to the VITAS Hospice in Cincinnati in care of the funeral home.

 

Zachary Smith, 32, of Versailles passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville as the result of an auto accident. He was born at Batesville on September 3, 1981 the son of Billy Pettit and Linda Smith.  He was married to Amanda Bush on December 12, 2012 and she survives. Other survivors include his father Billy Pettit of Versailles; the mother of his children Amanda Schmidt of Versailles; three sons Jordan, Tyler, and Ethan Smith; two daughters Kaitlyn and Allysan Smith all of Versailles; step-children Brooklyn Burgmeier and Danica Bush both of North Vernon; one sister Alicia Pettit of Benham. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 9th at 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Roger Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be from 5pm until time of services. Memorials will be accepted for Mr. Smith’s children in care of the funeral home.

 

Carolyn Lee, 63, of Versailles passed away Friday, January 3, 2014 at the Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. She was born at Millsboro in Bell County, Kentucky on May 4, 1950 the daughter of Hugh and Emma Thomas McConnell. She was married to Kenneth Lee and he survives. Other survivors include her mother Emma McConnell of Pierceville; two sons Kenneth Lee and Kevin (Rebecca) Lee both of Versailles; two daughters Jennifer (Steve) Hodgson of Westport and Kimberly Lee of Versailles; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; five brothers Jack (Donna) McConnell of Aurora, Doug (Annette) McConnell and Steve (Regina) McConnell both of Osgood, Mark (Kerry) McConnell of Delaware, and Larry (Bev) McConnell of Milan; three sisters Patricia (Richard) Sproessig of Versailles, Rita (George) Anderson of Osgood, and Peggy (Jeff) Schueler of Anderson. She was preceded in death by her father, her niece April Asherman, and her nephews Michael Sproessig and Heath McConnell. Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church at Sunman. She enjoyed her family, crocheting, and camping. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 8th at 10am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Sue Hacker officiating. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Pentecostal Holiness Church at Sunman in care of the funeral home.

 

Robert Dobbs, 64, of Pulaski, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the Hillsdale Hospital in Pulaski. He was born at Batesville on May 19, 1949 the son of Leonard and Margaret Miller Dobbs. He was married to Rita Swinney and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter Lori Dobbs of Nashville, Tennessee; two brothers Joe Dobbs of Batesville and Roy (Kathy) Dobbs of New Marion; one sister Mary (Don) Nealis of Madison, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Dobbs was a 1967 graduate of South Ripley High School and earned his  B. S. degree in accounting from Ball State University. He served in the US Army from 1967 to 1971 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Dobbs was employed with Brindley Construction and later was a partner in the Abernathy Hardware. He had also devised a financing/leasing plan with Fed Ex trucks working with a firm in Mt. Juliet. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 4th at 11am at the Bennett-May-Giles Funeral Home in Pulaski. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, January 5th at 1pm at the New Marion Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the New Marion Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home. 

 

Daniel King, 51, of Dabney passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home. He was born at Middletown, Ohio on May 18, 1962 the son of Estil and Norma Sizemore King. Survivors include his mother Norma King of Dabney; three brothers Jerry (Felicia) King of Dallas, Texas, Steve (Bambi) King and Phil (Kelly) King both of Dabney along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Estil King, and his sister Vicki King. Mr. King was a 1980 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was a former employee of TRW in Knoxville, Tennessee and had been employed for six years at Honda in Greensburg where he worked in maintenance. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 6th at 3pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Dabney Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 2pm until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Dabney Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

 

Oliver Lane Ballmer, 5, of Holton passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the Jennings St. Vincent Hospital in North Vernon. He was born at Louisville on August 14, 2008 the son of Josh and Kayla Wingate Ballmer. Survivors include his parents, his brother Reese, and his sister Olivia; maternal grandmother Patricia Pollitt of Connersville; paternal grandfather Kevin Ballmer of Milan; paternal great-grandparents Pat Cubert of Milan and Kermit and Wanda Ballmer of Independence, Kentucky; maternal great-grandparents Raymond and Margaret Ross of North Vernon; uncles Tyler Ballmer of Versailles and Nathan Ballmer of Milan.  He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Susan Ballmer, maternal grandfather William Ross, and maternal great-grandparents Bill and Frances Wingate. Oliver attended the Very Blessed Children pre-school at the Versailles Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 6th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mark Ballmer, Oliver’s great-uncle officiating. Burial will be in the Craven Cemetery at Milan. Visitation will be Sunday from 3pm to 7pm. Memorials may be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in care of the funeral home.

 

 Jack McCarty, 66, of Versailles passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at his home. He was born at Scottsburg on August 13, 1947 the son of Stanley and Edna Nichols McCarty. He was married to Caroline Strubbe on March 25, 1970 and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2013. Survivors include three sons Brian (Mary) McCarty, Brad (Elizabeth) McCarty, and Tyler McCarty all of Versailles; 5 grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents.  Mr. McCarty was a 1965 graduate of Versailles High School and worked as a fork lift operator for Ohio Rod from 1968 until his retirement in 2008. He served in the US Army from 1966 to 1968 and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge. Jack was a member of the Versailles Church of Christ and the Versailles American Legion. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4th at 10:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Becky Pohle officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Friday from 5pm to 8pm.
